Gordon Macfarlane Posted November 4, 2013 Posted November 4, 2013 Hi guy's been searching around for an all in one solution to make my own cd transport based on a cd/dvd rom drive. I have read a few articles that suggest that a common old CD/dvd rom drive outputs a very 'square' digital signal but have only found PATA driver display boards on the net and didn't want to go down that road as new PATA drives are becoming hard to find. I stumbled on a company call Musicaltech , http://musicaltech.com/ that makes a range of interesting dacs , input and output boards. Among their products MT offer a board with SATA input and coax, AES and I2S output. Looks like a very interesting solution even with a price of around $350 landed. An extra $50 gets you an OLED display board and the whole lot is remote controlled.
henry218 Posted November 5, 2013 Posted November 5, 2013 the same chip was used in accuphase and so other high end cd player. looking forward for your impression
Gordon Macfarlane Posted November 5, 2013 Author Posted November 5, 2013 Hi Henry , it will be a while till I get round to this purchase but happy to report back when I do.
hochopeper Posted November 5, 2013 Posted November 5, 2013 henry do you mean the spartan6 chip is the one that was used elsewhere?
hochopeper Posted November 5, 2013 Posted November 5, 2013 (edited) You realise it's just a FPGA right? IE the chip has no defined behaviour until it is programmed? They can be used in video surveillance, displays, automotive audio systems ... it's not a dedicated CD drive controller chip. With that said, this certainly does look like an interesting product and their DAC boards look interesting too though their power supply circuit appears to have some room for improvement (but would need a complete pcb layout design change and I can see the reasoning for their current design choice) Edited November 5, 2013 by hochopeper 1
henry218 Posted November 5, 2013 Posted November 5, 2013 i didnt realised that, thank you for pointing that out. well at least we know that the chip capable to do the task needed. i guess thats why certain digital maker quite excelled in programming such as wavelength can have exceptional product.
