Hi all,

I'm trying to track down a recording of Peter Wispelway playing the Bach cello concertos. Does anyone know where I can get it from or another recording of them that is as good on vinyl?

Thanks in advance,

Rob

I have asked Keith from Vinyl Eye to look into it already. Seems it may not even be available on vinyl.

Anyone know what is the best vinyl recording in there (honest :P ) opinion?

Think you may mean the six cello suites BWV 1007 - 1012, and doubt wispelway's recording would have had a vinyl release given its age (released 1990 ish)

However if it's the combination of Bach cello and wax you seek I can suggest you search out janos starker's excellent and historic recording, it'll set you back in the region of one hundred clams

Hi,  I think the artist you mean is Dutch cellist Peter/Pieter Wispelwey (versus the spelling “..wayâ€)  This may assist your searches.

I don’t know about vinyl, but on CD a quick search from my favourite classical source shows:

This is a  recording featuring the six cello suites, and a bonus dvd in which he talks about the recording.

This blurb is interesting in that this recording was done differently, even considered controversial:

“Celebrating his 50th birthday, this recording of Bach’s Complete Cello Suites is Pieter Wispelwey’s third recording of the repertoire, but probably his most controversial!

Based on extensive research by Laurence Dreyfus and John Butt (from the Dunedin Consort), Pieter tuned his strings down to a pitch of 392 for this recording, and the resulting sound is a very rich, sonorous experience. His cello also has gut strings for this recording and is played with a short bow.

The suites are set out on disc in a chronological order, so you can listen for yourself to see if you can hear the difference in pitch and whether you prefer this recording over his othersâ€

I was fortunate enough to see a live performance of Peter Wispelway earlier this year, he is stunning to watch visually as much as to hear.  His gestures to the performers around him and the audience while playing add another dimension.  In fact he was most playful, theatrical, with a flair for the dramatic and comedic.  At the end of the piece, after much applause, he impromptu got up and asked the first violinist to play a short encore piece with him from sight!

Enjoy his performance whatever you end up finding!

I can also recommend Pierre Fournier on DG or Anner Bylsma's recordings, both great performances in good sound quality on vinyl.

Yep Anner Bylsma's recording another favorite of mine, was unaware it had been released on vinyl - is that the 1992 recording on the strad 'servais' cello?

I have this. It suits my taste better than his 1998 recording. Sounds great too.
