FAPOS Posted November 1, 2013 Posted November 1, 2013 So my Technics SU-V2 has stopped working... it powers/lights up but there isnt the click of the relay a few seconds after flicking the switch, and subsequently no output. Fuses are fine. Should i bother trying to replace the relay or would it more than likely be something more than just that? The relay is part of the 'speaker protection circuitry'. When it first happened i did notice a slight electrical burning smell - though i cant see anything on the inside that looks like its burned out. http://www.hifiengine.com/library/technics/su-v2.shtml
Guest Mr Thorens Posted November 1, 2013 Posted November 1, 2013 These units contain a monolithic IC which at this age (remembering there a 1980s amp) tend to die. I've seen a few of them. The IC is probably sending DC to the speaker output and therefore the protection relays have cut out and hence they won't play. The ICs are available on eBay and can be replaced, however it can be a lottery what other components have broken down in the process. E.g. there are several small signal diodes and transistors around that part of the circuit. I managed to repair two similar units, however one other I couldn't find the fault even after replacing the IC and several hours. I gave up in the end. The sound of these units wasn't fantastic anyway so it is probably more economical to replace it with another vintage amp than attempt a repair (unless you can DIY). The NAD3020 is a favourite from that era and is fully transistorized (no ICs) and therefore more repairable. Marantz is another one. With older amps there is always the risk of capacitors in the Power supply failing and also electrolytic caps in the signal path get off spec and downgrade the sound. That's why I always recapped the amps that I dealt with. The better designed ones can sound magnificent when recapped with audio grade caps. I have a Harman Kardon PM620 I did that to and it sounds sensational. I hope this helps.
FAPOS Posted November 1, 2013 Author Posted November 1, 2013 Thanks mate - yeah the idea of just replacing it with something that would cost less than what i paid for it plus the cost to get properly checked/repaired crossed my mind... dont really have the knowledge/skills to troubleshoot it myself. It was only hooked up to my PC, not something i sat & listened to on a regular basis.
