What a performance from George tonight in India!

As I post this, he has just reached 150.

He is now a positive for the first ashes test.

Should he be captain?

No. His one day international record is excellent and his current form is great. He obviously has the temperament and leadership skills. But you have to prove yourself at Test level before captaincy. Our selections are wobbly enough as it is without having a skipper unsure of his spot.

No. Not at this stage anyway.

An ability at one day cricket does not automaticlly make one a Test player. Much less so a captain.

By all means put him in the side. See how he goes. If he has the mental game for Tests.

Clarke has obvious faults as a leader. As far as I am concerned, his decision making on the field is pretty good. Better than Ponting IMO.

By all means a Test spot is a possibility, as long as he can replicate his one day form in the Test Arena,

A long way to go before he or anyone else in the current Test team is even close to being considered for the Captaincy...

I actually agree but believe Bailey should be in the side for test experience and take over when Clarke's back fails.

Yeah, not sure about Captaincy, but I certainly hope he gets a guernsey in the test side, his form is stunning., confidence must be sky high.

Playing on concrete pitches with tennis balls in India does not translate directly to test matches.  If Glen Maxwell can score runs, it must be easy.

Baily has played 96 first class matches and his average is 38.2

I wonder if his mum and dad were fans of James Stewart in that movie that comes on every Christmas.?

You talking 'Rear window' where he breaks his leg and watches the neighbours go about their daily business and suspects one neighbour of killing his GF ?

is this the analogy that you are drawing that Bailey will gradually undermine Clarke ?

Yes give Bailey a chance in the test team by all means and when Clarke fails give captaincy to the WK - this seems to be our go to plan

Cheers Chewie

Not enoug unfortunately.  Only Aussie captain to lead a team to score 350 twice and still not be able to defend.

I think Warner is in the same frame of mind.

It's a Wonderful Life, great film. I wonder if this George Bailey will have such a wonderful life.

Bailey has the potential to lead the Aussies in the longer format of the game. It disappoints me that he only gets picked when Clarke has an injury in the one day matches. He is a much better player than most of the team and his fielding is world class.

Give him the opportunity to try the longer format.

If Glen Maxwell can get a baggy green, surely Bailey can?

George is a good friend of my university crew.    He and I didn't go to the same high-school, but my mates that did, keep in contact with him.     Go G!

Also - More evidence that Tassie punches far above our weight in sports.    (I am an ex-AIS)

Yes Dave. We are following the Poms in boosting our squad with overseas players ;)

What are his "obvious faults"?

Since he has assumed the captaincy, they haven't been apparent to me.

Give me Pup over Ponting any day.

As an on field captain, Clarke is far,far superior to Ponting IMO.

He has the feel of when to change bowlers and where to place the field.....at the right time. An area Ponting was sadly lacking.

Clarke's "obvious' faults lie as an off the field captain. An area almost as important.

He has personality clashes with many members of the team. Some are gone already (Hussey, Katich) to the detriment of the team. Others are still hanging in there ( Watson ). He has little or no control over his charges behaviour off the field. The players do not respect him enough to take any heed......and respect is something earned, not just given. Perhaps, being annointed 'the next captain" so early in his career gave him a swelled head or a sense of "easy times".

Clarke also gives the perception (at least) that his image is as important to him as his job. The "metrosexual' persona that he gives off rubs many up the wrong way.

Yes, I am one of those people.

I do agree with you Orp. Prefer Pup over Punter any day. Punter was not much chop on the field or off. I believe that his personality clashes resulted in a few "early retirements" as well.

Unfortunately, we have no "better" or even "equal" choice for a captain than Clarke. Looks like we are stuck with him till he retires. Hopefully he can mature into the job.

I think Pup's problems off the field are over-stated.
