Excellent show and I wondered last week what Robert Hughes would make of it.

It is a bit of a ripoff of Hughes' great book from the '60's isn't it? But still great fun.

Poor Hughes. His last series was a shocker. Enfant terrible turns into old fart.

damn, at work tonight. I hope the missus is recording it. Is it on tonight? Last weeks was good but I prefer 20thC stuff. I went to the Sydey Moderns at The NSWAG recently & was very impressed. A very fine collection. I like Capon's style. Hughes is our greatest art historian but, umm, he can go on a bit.

His books were good.

They got us into start collecting 20thC art about 20 years ago. What a journey.

Yes he did change but also that awful car accident had a very real and noticeable impact on the man and I felt sorry for him. His siblings come across as just as irascible and cranky too.

G'day Mikey, watch it on iView on the ABC website mate. Funny that, I missed the first episode because I've heard Capon waffle on at a few events.

I came to feel the same way. At the time I was just pissed off with him.

Interesting that all the people who replied to the thread are in NSW. I guess that means they won't be at one of my GTG's for me to be able to show you our stuff. I get excited showing it to new people because it always helps me see it through new eyes.

Time for another visit to the NGV.

Why don't you bring it all up and hang it at my place and we'll have a gtg here? We have plenty of wall space, waiting to be filled with art.

If only I'd known, SM. I was in your fair city last weekend. I'm sure you'd put on a fine GTG

In lieu of that, Dave's place is a bit closer to home for me!

I haven't been to the AGNSW in a few months.

Depends. Do you like Nolan, Mora, Boyd, Blackman and Friend? Do you drink Nespresso?

This is the Nolan, 1957 from the Mrs Fraser series shown in London.

Stunning!

I think it is part of our national psyche to have a cultural cringe & Capon's show proves that we do have artists of high calibre that are unknown beyond the cognoscenti. The Sydney Moderns exhibition was a real revelation for me. I like this thread :) .

The missed opportunity to buy Picassos etc in 1939 was interesting. There was a similar episode when John Peter Russell returned to Oz from Europe some years earlier and offered Van Goghs, Manets, Monets, Sisleys etc etc from his collection and was declined.

Of course. I could introduce you to Charlie if you like.

Nice Nolan, is it yours?

We've met Charlie. There is an interesting photo of the young Mustuds with him from about 15 years ago that raises a laugh when we show it to others who know Charlie. Mum knew him well back in the '50's/'60's when she worked in the restaurant in Melbourne that they all went to. That is where our David Boyd pottery came from.

The painting is Woman in Swamp, and yes.

Charlie is a card, and quite mad these days, but I haven't seen him for years. I was his minder for a short period, fed him and kept him off the turps. I am not his brother in law, but my eldest son, now 17, is Charlie's nephew.

Looking forward to the gtg ;)

He was not quite mad yet when we met him but he needed minding back then as well. Interesting relationship for you.

I used to fly to Sydney each week years ago and one thing I always enjoyed was seeing the huge Blackman at the entry to the Qantas Club in Melbourne as I came up the escalator. Now sold, so I shifted to Asia for the last few years before I retired - well, maybe that was not the only reason.

The last time I saw Charlie, he threatened, unprovoked, to hit me over the head with a pot plant, terracotta iirc. I doubt he would remember that. I wonder if he would remember me? Probably not, come to think of it.
