Fake UPOCC silver wire on ebay.

Recommended Posts

I thought I would take the opportunity to alert  you guys to unscrupulous deals on Ebay purporting to sell UPOCC silver wire .The sellers in question  on Ebay  are from Taiwan .

I recieved an email from the manufacturers who confirmed the wire is fake .It is their policy to only sell teflon coated wire ,and not the bare wire being offered on Ebay .

If you just  google UPOCC silver wire ,you will see which ones .

There are lots of scams out there ,so if it doesnt smell right ,dig around a bit .

Yeah, I have never seen the Neotech bare.

I so like the Teflon insulated stuff, but I guess you want to have it bare? or use a different dielectric?

Edit: That's the official line, the truth is he made an ass of himself once or twice too often so had to go............but don't tel him.

Any idea what quality the bare stuff is?  If it's still reasonably pure e.g 6 nines or 4 nines (99.99%) - Even if it's not UP or OCC, it is good for audio, even if the seller is less than honest in his advertising. Clear Day cables in the US use 4 nines silver in their cables which have excellent reviews.  A US seller on Ebay also advertises Silver OCC wire but it's only when you read the description that you find it's silver-plated copper.

BTW - 4 nines silver wire can usually be purchased from jewellery wholesalers at an okay price, even in Australia.  It's classed as Fine Silver - as opposed to Sterling Silver, which is around 95% silver and 5% copper and - oddly - less conductive than copper.

Disclaimer. I sell the Teflon coated UPOCC from a reputable source (mostly copper) so I tend to keep an eye on what else is around.

Thanks for the heads-up.

I buy from here:-

https://www.aemetal.com.au/Webstore/p-1590-fine-silver-round-wire-10mm-9999-high-purity.aspx

Not certified UPOCC, but it is Australian, genuine and about the same price.

If you ask nicely they will soft anneal it for you as well. Or ask, it may be soft annealed already [dementia setting in I'm afraid].

For speaker wire you could also try this:-

https://www.aemetal.com.au/Webstore/c-231-fine-silver-rectangular-strip.aspx

Support your local silver mine I say!

Steven.

Hi gmbd.

I tried the silver but the quality is low ,both from feel and sound quality .

Compared to soft annealed silver it is springy and stiff indicating it is not annealed .It is also brittle and continually breaks .

From a sound quality perspective it sounds bright and lacks warmth and liquidity unlike good quality annealed soft silver .

Their Mundorf silver gold wire appears to be the exact same wire ,and sounds identical.

I would not recommend this wire if you want great sound .

Cheers Brenden.

I used homegrown audio cables for a while and they are pretty good sounding in my system. The ones I used had 8 or 16 multi strand conductors.

Haven't tried their bare wires before tho.

Not quite sure what 74 bucks gets you of the 10 gauge stuff tho? No mention of length. By the foot?
