ThirdDrawerDown Posted October 28, 2013 Posted October 28, 2013 I am hearing the final of X Factor because of sound leakage under the door to our TV room. Seems to me that crowd noise goes up in volume in proportion to the amount of melisma used. Likewise the comments about "emotion" "authenticity" "true talent" increase with melisma. I blame Whitney Houston. Here's wikipedia: Lauren Everitt from BBC News Magazine commented on melisma used in Houston's recording and its influence. "An early 'I' in Whitney Houston's 'I Will Always Love You' takes nearly six seconds to sing. In those seconds the former gospel singer-turned-pop star packs a series of different notes into the single syllable," stated Everitt. "The technique is repeated throughout the song, most pronouncedly on every 'I' and 'you'. The vocal technique is called melisma, and it has inspired a host of imitators. Other artists may have used it before Houston, but it was her rendition of Dolly Parton's love song that pushed the technique into the mainstream in the 90s. [...] But perhaps what Houston nailed best was moderation." Everitt said that "n a climate of reality shows ripe with 'oversinging', it's easy to appreciate Houston's ability to save melisma for just the right moment".[288] A particularly dire example of over-singing tonight is a cover of Prince's "Purple Rain". But the worst part is the audience members who carry on as if their only experience of being in a studio audience has been gained from sycophantic American daytime TV such as Oprah or Ellen. There is one screamer who clearly the producers have hunted out and given a season pass to. I don't know who she is, but she has a career cutting corrugated iron ahead of her, and judging her just by her behaviour I suspect she has the intellectual capacity to be satisfied with exactly such a career. Back to the music. I look forward, for a given degree of looking forward, in this case say somewhat comparable to a dental extraction, to a compilation album where the key words "Spike Jones" are replaced by "X Factor contestants" 3
ThirdDrawerDown Posted October 28, 2013 Author Posted October 28, 2013 Must .... buy ... headphones...
ENIGMA Posted October 28, 2013 Posted October 28, 2013 Must .... buy ... headphones... Noise canceling ones and i'm not referring to noise outside the headphones.
colinm1 Posted October 28, 2013 Posted October 28, 2013 its crazy..no matter who wins it will appear as no 1 on the charts at the first day of release !!! who won last year? I really blame me and you we are the people who give our kids the $$ to buy this crap listen to Aretha's first album ..she was about 16 or 17 now call these people stars!!!!!! 2
Jventer Posted October 28, 2013 Posted October 28, 2013 Just endured the final - nice kids - but not for me.
Demondes Posted October 28, 2013 Posted October 28, 2013 (edited) I cannot bare to watch these shows. The judges are worse than the contestants, because there is a oneupmanship contest between them to heap praise. One kid gets a 10 out of 10 and where can they go for the next kid who is better..... 11 It is a bit like the Spinal amplifier that goes to 11, or Garrison Keillor's Lake Wobegon "...where all the women are strong, all the men are good-looking, and all the children are above average." http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NrVCjnRdB_k Edited October 28, 2013 by Demondes
davidsss Posted October 28, 2013 Posted October 28, 2013 I really can't stand melisma. I just assume they can't hold a note. They should listen to singers like Dionne Warwick who know how to hold a note. Good thing I don't watch these shows, they would just piss me off! DS 1
Guest Posted October 28, 2013 Posted October 28, 2013 I enjoyed watching X factor with my 13 year old daughter - the 14 year old boy who wrote his own songs was a real talent and the winner Dami was a nice change from the typical winner - I view it as the modern day version of young talent time - there is a place for shows aimed at our younger market - my 13 year old who is in a choir and plays piano found it inspirational - good on them for giving it a go - nothing wrong with a bit of showmanship
LogicprObe Posted October 28, 2013 Posted October 28, 2013 The fact that these sort of shows are still going means that there are plenty of suckers still watching them.
colinm1 Posted October 28, 2013 Posted October 28, 2013 (edited) sure the show has a place, but not on my tv, aimed at the young market for sure, which is not bad! at least there is no killing or sex ect, just don't think there was an other tina arema,or debble byrne amongst them this year the singers are surely very nice young people,no question about that those judges ,should go back and sing for a living , sorry should have read.................SING for a living I didn't see any of them at this years mo awards? ill go back to bed now ..its 3,45 am Edited October 28, 2013 by colinm1
