Hey.  It's high time I learnt to setup a table without calling on the (generous) assistance of friends.  I learn quickly and online video tutorials are an expedient way to get the basics.

Any online video recommendations?

JD,

I learnt TT setup when my Asak cart had a corroded coil and only one channel was working, all because when my daughter was 5, she asked what is this thing with this round bit in the centre!

Well Celeste, this is what we used before CD.....

How doesn't work?......

No videos but;

Then you need tools, such as Allen keys imperial and metric, screw drivers and small spanner set again both metric and imperial, a scope, some cart alignment tools!

Remember, its the fun in learning, and the feeling you get once you have it running

good luck!

I was in the same spot as you. I just watched a lot of videos and even though they were all slightly different there is always one way that occurs more and i just followed that.

The protractor part was never clear to me so when i got my new cartridge replaced i asked if i can sit in and watch how they set it up and went through everything with me which was nice.

Thanks guys.  I've been hoovering up some youtube vids this past hour.  Got me a Pro-ject Debut Carbon with a Grado cart (on loan).  Phono stage is the iFi iPhono, which I'm confident is setup correctly.

Was getting noise and hellish distortion from the table over the weekend and pretty much narrowed it down to the cart.  Wanted to be 100% sure so thought I'd put the stock Ortofon OM10 back onto the arm.  Hence this post.....

......but I *think* I might have done it.  Fitted the OM10, wired it in, set alignment in TWO places with the cardboard bizzo, set tracking weight (which I know how to do) and I have sound that's none too shabby. No distortion, so that's good.  It might be a bit bass shy but that could just be the the way the record is meant to be (Grace Jones, Island Life).  Screwing in a cart ain't a job for fat fingers is it?

Ironically, this is my back-up table.  My main table (a Lenco, SME arm, Zu Denon cart) is having a new plinth fitted and I wanted to spin a few records to get a feel (again) for the Pro-ject before the Lenco comes back and I marvel at the improvement.

If all else fails, there's my back-up back-up table, an old Dual but I don't think I need to reach for that quite yet.

Shane - very kind of you.  I *might* have sorted it (see above) but I guess improvements are always possible, especially with what is bound to be a rudimentary first setup from me.  PM coming your way soon... :hiccup .

Fremer's DVD......

In fact I even bothered Mr. Fremer with my stupid questions and sketches sent through email, but he answered them all.... :thumb:

Buy a cheap cart if you are going to do it yourself for the first time and enjoy the journey... :)
