blakey72 Posted October 26, 2013 Posted October 26, 2013 I've just started getting into jazz, something I never thought I'd do and I'm wanting some direction in the way of artists. I've been listening to a lot of Diana Krall and Erykah Badu and like them both. What artists do you think I should be looking at that are similar to these styles? Cheers Blake. 1
blakey72 Posted October 26, 2013 Author Posted October 26, 2013 Have you checked Melody Gardot or Cat Power ? No but am going to now
henry218 Posted October 26, 2013 Posted October 26, 2013 Holly Cole, Eva Cassidy and Katie Melua. Standard for lovely jazz music and recording
Peter_F Posted October 26, 2013 Posted October 26, 2013 Have you checked Melody Gardot or Cat Power ? I'm not into the jazz stuff but I do highly rate Melody Gardot.

emesbee Posted October 26, 2013 Posted October 26, 2013 I'm just getting into jazz myself. I've been listening to some 70s jazz fusion since, well, the 70s. Lately though I've started listening to a wider variety of jazz from the 50s to more current stuff. For me, jazz is very much a hit and miss affair. Some classic jazz albums just don't do it for me, but there are others that really hit the spot. I really can't explain what it is about a jazz recording that makes it work for me, I just have to listen to a lot of recordings to see what works and what doesn't. That's all I can recommend, really. Have a listen to a lot of different types of jazz from different eras, and find what appeals to you.
eman Posted October 26, 2013 Posted October 26, 2013 I'm not into the jazz stuff but I do highly rate Melody Gardot. Mmmm... Not into 'Jazz' myself but Melody is Smooth. The earlier the better all the way back to the self released Bedroom Sessions EP for me. There's Angels on that first one but I'm not into the last Fiesta.
teagle Posted October 26, 2013 Posted October 26, 2013 Classical FM ABC broadcast Jazz Sat & Sun 5-7pm, hosted by Mal Stanley, & is a good way I have found to get used to listening to a varied selection of styles. 3
Guest Misterioso Posted October 26, 2013 Posted October 26, 2013 Jazz is so much more than female voice. But fair enough if that is what you like. I suggest Nina Simone, Shirley Horn and Dee Dee Bridgewater. Maybe also try some instrumental jazz in future, the Dave Brubeck Quartet might be a good start.
houdinifangs Posted October 26, 2013 Posted October 26, 2013 Eric Dolpy - Out to Lunch It's a bit surreal. 1st Jazz album I got into after a diet of indie/metal/punk. 2

JeffK Posted October 26, 2013 Posted October 26, 2013 (edited) OK I was just going to suggest you go to eg jazzradio.com where they have different genres and categories of jazz and you can listen and identify what styles you like. Another possibility is musicovery .com Edited October 26, 2013 by JeffK 1
caddisgeek Posted October 26, 2013 Posted October 26, 2013 Eric Dolpy - Out to Lunch It's a bit surreal. 1st Jazz album I got into after a diet of indie/metal/punk. Jeez mate, throw him at the deep end why don't you? (probably my favorite jazz LP too though)
oldrose Posted October 26, 2013 Posted October 26, 2013 If you're just starting to get into Jazz can I suggest the Ken Burns Jazz DVDs. Will take you through the evolution of jazz from its begins into some of the strange paths its gone down like free jazz etc.
buddyev Posted October 26, 2013 Posted October 26, 2013 Jazz is such a huge and varied field. Maybe start with some accessible classics and work out from there - miles davis' kind of blue, coltrane's blue train, ah hum by mingus, Brubeck' take five 1
ArthurDent Posted October 27, 2013 Posted October 27, 2013 Jazz is so much more than female voice. Sure is. John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Bill Evans, Herbie Hancock, Stan Getz, Dizzy Gillespie, Thelonious Monk, Charlie Parker to name but a few.
