I explore new stuff every time I go into an op shop.

Have to look at everything to find what I want, if any 😜

I don't think that counts!  I sometimes do that and I believe it is called being cheapskate!  🙂

I’m the opposite, with the ease of high quality streaming and finding new music via Roon, I’d spend 2-3 hours a week investigating new releases, mostly in my favourite genres, anything I like will get additional plays and those that are excellent will be added to my favourites for future reference, or purchased if really good. Of my thousands of albums I have purchased I’d guess I play 200-300 of the old music, the ones I can remember that are good from memory, the other albums only if I stumble across them.

The revolution is definitely going to occur when people looking for Rumours and Titanic accidentally play Trout Mask Replica and watch The Conformist. All the material is laid right out on Spotify and Netflix.

Why do we stop exploring new music as we get older?

I haven't.

The Conformist
Is that the Bertolucci movie?

Haven’t stopped listening for new music , but a lot of new music is 💩💩💩

That's easy to avoid, cafe67. Just check if it's been nominated for a Grammy.

Or you come home with a new album only to find you already have two copies. I’m buying much less vinyl because of that. Streaming is much more cost effective lol

I seem to find most of my new music from online radio stations.
If I hear something I like enough then I might listen to the related album on Spotify.

If I like it enough from listening on Spotify then I might buy it which is usually a digital download.

I suspect most of the posters in this thread so far, are older, and most of you still like to pursue new music.  Why are people here so different to the general population that the studies in ABC article refer to?

I definitely don't...spend most Fridays listening to new releases for the week.

Also always go and see support acts at concerts I'm going too. Found many great bands/artists this way.

define new music - if I discover a older group that is new to me is the new music?  Or is it new-new music only - in which case most new music I’ve found recently , has either been recommendations from SNA or via sbs chill 😎

The 'Title' has some truth to it. I work in a team of 10(aged between (45-65) where only 2 of us have sound systems and listen to new music via ROON/QOBUZ.

The other 8 couldn't be bothered with anything post mid 90's at best.

Because "we" typically are people with a hifi system and may have invested heavily in curating it.

We are usually not the standard population who listen to things only on soundbars or tiny speaker setups. It's not surprising that we listen to music and / or choose different music than many others.

The look of actual bewilderment many people have when visiting my home and the array of speakers that pepper nearly every room is always amusing to behold.

I get this, and I'd consider myself a small "a" audiophile. We've just moved to a new home and it has a magnificent alfresco area which has 2 sets in in ceiling speakers... which have never been connected. My wife doesn't understand my desire to see if they are actually any good.

In regard to new music, I'll often listen to a bit via Roon/Tidal when I have the house to myself, but find it difficult to rummage through the biased nature of the listings.
