Micks Posted October 24, 2013 Posted October 24, 2013 Does anyone know somewhere I can get some good banana plugs? I would prefer a type that I can solder. I don't need anything fancy.
Grumpy Posted October 24, 2013 Posted October 24, 2013 Jaycar has the cheap ones and the solder ones last time I looked (which was a couple of years a go).
tygersmoke Posted October 24, 2013 Posted October 24, 2013 (edited) I bought some of these from ebay recently, but have yet to receive them....... http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/290774377665 I have come to dislike bulky heavy brass connectors, even if gold plated, and am looking forward to giving these a go. They appear similar to what is recommended in the 'Cables Cookbook'. I bought fifty pack, but he sells in smaller qtys also. Shipping for my lot was EUR 7.50 Edited October 24, 2013 by tygersmoke

emesbee Posted October 24, 2013 Posted October 24, 2013 Selby Acoustics sell a range of banana plugs, as well as other stuff. I've placed several orders with them for speaker cable and banana plugs, and so far found their service to be prompt and reliable. http://www.selby.com.au/

Micks Posted October 24, 2013 Author Posted October 24, 2013 Thanks guys. I need a few more than 2 pairs so I will source from somewhere. These look alright: http://www.selby.com.au/24k-gold-plated-sawtooth-banana-plugs-accepts-12-awg-bp0534s.html No reason I can't solder them
emesbee Posted October 24, 2013 Posted October 24, 2013 Thanks guys. I need a few more than 2 pairs so I will source from somewhere. These look alright: http://www.selby.com.au/24k-gold-plated-sawtooth-banana-plugs-accepts-12-awg-bp0534s.html No reason I can't solder them I bought some of those, but much prefer these. http://www.selby.com.au/cables/connectors/banana-plugs/neotech-quality-banana-plugs-gold-plated-accepts-12-awg-black-nc126b.html I bought the Neotech plugs, but the Selby brand is a bit cheaper and probably just as good. Having tried the sawtooth type, I'm not really keen on them. They make a good enough connection, but it always feels like you have to force them into the speaker socket when you plug them in. The other type seem to connect much easier. In any case, both types have two screws to hold the cable, and form quite a solid connection. They will only take up to 12AWG cable though. I did try them with some 10AWG cable I bought recently. The cable will connect ok, but the cable thickness means the screw heads won't tighten down flush, and that prevents the plastic cover from being fitted. I bought some of these for the 10AWG cable. http://www.selby.com.au/cables/connectors/banana-plugs/24k-gold-plated-heavy-duty-locking-banana-plugs-red-9-awg-bp0575r.html They will actually take cables thicker than 10AWG, so I doubled the cable over before tightening the screws. The plugs locks into place on the speaker terminals, and seems to form quite a solid connection.
Damhooligan Posted October 24, 2013 Posted October 24, 2013 Selby is good. I bought mine from space hifi. Bought the dual spacelock ones. Very happy with them.

They appear similar to what is recommended in the 'Cables Cookbook'. I bought fifty pack, but he sells in smaller qtys also. Shipping for my lot was EUR 7.50 I use them too - as, with the springy cylinder, they provide a very big contact area (compared to the sprung splines on typical banana plugs). And there's copper underneath the gold not brass. Actually Cu-Be, as the beryllium provides the 'spring'. Much higher Cu ratio, though, than with brass. They're actually made by Multi-Contact (or Multi-Connect - forget the exact name). RS Components sell them but your eBay source is great. Regards, Andy
tygersmoke Posted October 24, 2013 Posted October 24, 2013 BTW, the ebay listing has a 'make offer' option. I offered EUR 38 for 50 connectors, which works out around a buck a pop or about $1.30 each delivered. The seller accepted the offer. Regards, Phil
