Juicester Posted October 23, 2013 Posted October 23, 2013 Let's face it. This is an expensive hobby - or at least, it can be, if you have expensive taste (like I do!). I'm keen to know where SNA'ers fit on the salary range purely because I often assume a lot of people here must be earning MEGA bucks. But that could be a fallacy - so perhaps this poll will shed some light! I won't vote first...
Guest yamaha_man Posted October 23, 2013 Posted October 23, 2013 My wage fluctuates year to year, I chose what I thought the average would be. Doesn't matter what you earn, it's never enough.
manchu Posted October 23, 2013 Posted October 23, 2013 Thread title asks for 'Take Home', but poll title asks for 'Gross'. Not really the same thing so I assume you mean gross?? Neither are really relevant IMO. I earn a reasonable wage, but by the time I pay the mortage, buy the weekly necessities for the family and budget for the regular expenses I'm left with about enough 'play' money to buy 1 record. 2

Guest JohnA Posted October 23, 2013 Posted October 23, 2013 i earn enough money that i dont have to take out loans to purchase my hifi gear
Juicester Posted October 23, 2013 Author Posted October 23, 2013 (edited) Thread title asks for 'Take Home', but poll title asks for 'Gross'. Not really the same thing so I assume you mean gross?? yes gross. "what do you take home", is a colloquial expression for what do you earn. I wasn't literally meaning - what ends up in your bank account (for most of us, that would be very little after mortgage payments etc!). Edited October 23, 2013 by Juicester
DRC Posted October 23, 2013 Posted October 23, 2013 A quick look through the books shows I have been able to pay myself around $6800 this calendar year (by years end that may blow out to $10 000). Pretty neat for a 50 hour week minimum (vintage is three months of 80+ hours a week). The icing on the cake will be the ATO will slug me around $35k in tax due to the effect of depreciation rules. Thinking of a career to change to much higher pay and benefits, it is called 'unemployed'.
ArthurDent Posted October 23, 2013 Posted October 23, 2013 What percentage of your disposable income you spend on this "hobby" might be of more interest. And perhaps marital status.

Hah - feel free to start that poll. % of income didn't interest me as much. As mentioned, I've developed an assumption on what the average SNA'er must be earning, and I wanted to see if that seemed accurate or not. Who in their right mind would take out a loan for Hifi???? (Except for a past member who's name starts with Glad I haven't got it that bad.. funny you should ask that. I had the same reaction as you - and ironically, it was JohnA who told me that it wasn't crazy to do this.... http://www.stereo.net.au/forums/index.php?/topic/49812-my-audio-heaven/?p=865577 Edited October 23, 2013 by Juicester
hochopeper Posted October 23, 2013 Posted October 23, 2013 (edited) I'm not doing too badly for a bloke under 30 ... but married, homeloan and my wife taking 18months off work to finish her degree because of the contact hours involved ... keeps my audio related spending modest. I dont think i said here that its crazy did i? i just said, i earn enough to NOT have to do it myself

hochopeper Posted October 23, 2013 Posted October 23, 2013 I earn enough that I buy 2nd hand, or DiY I think I'd DiY regardless, I would miss the enjoyment of building / learning! (notice I didn't say the pleasure of completing something, a DiYer's work is never finished)
evil c Posted October 23, 2013 Posted October 23, 2013 As a small business owner in the current fiscally challenged climate I am fortunate to have a full time working wife ( so yes - another bastard!)
hochopeper Posted October 23, 2013 Posted October 23, 2013 Your wife works????? Lucky man! That is one of my dreams! She finishes her study this semester ... she's older than me so pressure is on for children in the not too distant future too ...
Juicester Posted October 24, 2013 Author Posted October 24, 2013 She finishes her study this semester ... she's older than me so pressure is on for children in the not too distant future too ... which means less income of course. I turn 30 in January, we've already got 1 bubba (fortunately the wifey is doing part-time which helps), and I'm hoping to have number 2 and 3 done before I'm 34 or so... then it's on to burning down this mortgage!
Grumpy Posted October 24, 2013 Posted October 24, 2013 (edited) HA! HA! HA! HA! HA!. Edited October 24, 2013 by Grumpy 1

Clive, you don't need a working-wife to be a barstud. You've already got that well covered. Graham
JeffK Posted October 24, 2013 Posted October 24, 2013 I put in what I was earning average over the last few years before redundancy in December 2012. I've spent way over what I anticipated at that time and will probably have to get work (always the intention but not easy) or access my super early. Jeff
