My friend saved my life when I was a teenager and while I managed to turn my life around and follow the straight and narrow, regrettably my friend was unable to do so. He spent most of his adult life addicted to booze and dope and reached rock bottom when his marriage broke down and his children disowned him. After losing all hope, his business also went down however he managed to obtain some menial work pushing a broom which he has done for over a decade. His sister was killed in a car crash and both his parents have passed. He is on his own. While leaving a pub, he was king hit from behind and suffered extensive damage to his teeth, with some serious infection soon setting in. His general health declined to such an extent that he has lost all but 2 of his teeth. Despite these problematic set-backs, my friend still has the most optimistic outlook on life and possesses the wittiest and most brilliant sense of humour you could imagine. Whenever I see my friend, despite the absence of many years, our conversation resumes immediately, as if I had only left the room to take a leak. My older brother reckons he is one of the nicest guys he has ever met. I have to agree. Some old mates have decided he has gone through more than enough and suggested we pooled our collective resources to pay for the restoration of his teeth by sending him to a dental clinic in Thailand. My other mates have all done well financially with their own careers and businesses and are able to contribute to the project without much financial pain. Since moving to Queensland, where we opted for a quieter lifestyle, our resources have not been as abundant as the other guys which is why I find the need to sell part of this collection. I feel this is the least I can do. True friends stay true friends despite whatever curved ball is thrown up. I am therefore offering for sale a significant number of my personal favourites from over 4 decades of serious collecting and will upload a series of lists which will include music from a fairly diverse range of styles including, rock / country / folk / jazz-fusion / progressive rock / instrumental / singer songwriter etc. There will a number of different lists following the format of these genre as well as a general one for CDs but the underlying selling information will be common to all lists. Therefore if you wanted to reserve some titles from the jazz-fusion list, please indicate your interest in that separate thread. Do the same for the progressive rock list and so on. This ensures there should be no dispute as to when a title was reserved if your interest is recorded and time stamped within each. As Marc has advised me there is no way to increase my personal message limit of 100, it makes sense for any reservation requests to be done manually by each member within the threads themselves. Transparent / Simple / Quick. Suggestions to reserve items in the Rock Genre Avatar - Joe Blow Your Name - Boris Item/s wanted - Johnny Winter - Blues - The Beatles - Butcher Cover - (in my dreams) Postcode 3250 Also mention any others you want from any other lists and add your details to those lists. This will time stamp and record your name within each list and help eliminate any disputes over who reserved anything first. As I am often away from my home computer, I would be unable to record your interests for you as someone else may have lodged a request correctly 5 minutes later. E.G. Also want 2 x Miles Davis - XXX & YYY from the jazz and Slayer - Bla Bla Bla from the metal list - details posted there separately. So, if you wanted 5 items from 3 different lists but only recorded your intentions in one list and someone else recorded the same wants correctly in each list, the other guy's details would have to prevail. These LPs have all come from my own personal collection and are for the most part in mint condition. Some have been bought new while others have been sourced after scouring through the used record shops decades ago searching for a copy in mint condition. Many are very old, some on original labels and obviously quite collectable. I have tried my best to price them according to their desirability, general value and some acknowledgment of the difficulty I experienced in tracking some elusive titles down. In many cases the copy I am selling is THE only one I have ever seen with many being long out of print. Some of these would now be considered quite hard to locate in the same condition as mine. I never lent them or played them at parties etc and hated annoying clicks, pops and farts so the vinyl condition should, for the most part be more than acceptable to most people. (Let's say mint minus to mint plus with maybe an excellent one or two LP's). You have my assurance they have been well cared for which is a lot more than can be said for most people's hacked up copies you might stumble across from time to time in some market or store. Some are over 40 years old. Due to the relative obscurity of some of these titles, they may have spent some time in a variety of record racks before I stumbled across them so be aware that some covers may have ring wear of a varying degree. Being a totally addicted music nut, I often snapped up anything I could locate, (being very mindful of the discs condition) but often ran out of time to play them all. I was also able to spend quite freely on my collection until I remarried in the mid 80's when that habit ceased immediately. Bugger! I would estimate I may not have played up to 30-40% of these records although I may have heard the music from other formats. They have been stored upright in a 8' x 4' purpose built wall unit and kept away from prying eyes and kids fingers. They were played on a Linn Sondek LP12 until I sold it in the late 70's and thereafter on a Thorens. Except where noted, I only have one copy of each of these LP's. You will find a lot of what is being sold is amongst the band’s best output. Postage Issues - LPs Rates for Australia Post are quite frankly a joke however, to try and keep costs down for you, I have a number of proposals: For anyone that wants a single LP mailed off, the current price for a package sent via the standard Parcel Post service, up to 500 grams is $6.95 to just about anywhere in Australia. I will place the LP between 2 sheets of stiff folded cardboard to afford maximum protection for an economical price. Reducing the dimensions of the cardboard slightly and assuming 2 LPs with only standard covers and a poly sleeve, I have managed to come in just under 500 grams so this might also be an option for those on a budget, wanting 2 records with no extra sleeves or booklets. A standard LP and one with a GFC will however take this over the 500 grams limit, at which point, the price goes up considerably. Australia Post also now charge a basic rate of $8.95 within the same state for a parcel between 500gms and 22Kg plus a variable distance charge per kilo or part thereof. So a 3.1Kg parcel sent from here to Cairns would cost $8.95 plus 4 x $1.70 = $15.75. For parcels sent interstate, the basic charge increases to $11.45 plus the various distance surcharges. However, for $16.95 Australia Post offers a pre-paid 435mm x 510mm satchel option for parcels weighing up to 5Kgs to anywhere in Australia. This option would suit anyone wanting a larger number of records as I can arrange for more substantial and protective padding without the worry of the extra weight adding to the cost. Previous record sales I have conducted were sent out in an unused pizza box and then inserted inside a flexible padded bag however, I feel the $16.95 option allows for the most bang for the buck and should enable members to have up to between 16-18 albums sent for the same price. I can use the same pizza boxes plus some bubble wrap inside one of these satchels to provide the best protection. Postage Issue - CDs For anyone wanting just CDs sent and no LPs, I have a number of flat 150mm x 200mm CD Mailers ready to go. These mailers are $1.25 each while the slightly larger 10mm thick ones cost $1.55. To keep the weight and costs down, I can mail out up to 3 discs in the flat mailer, (omitting the plastic jewel cases). This would allow for 3 discs, 3 rear covers, and 3 booklets with an average of 4-8 pages. Thick booklets might take this over the 125 gram limit. I need to clarify the postage situation with Australia Post as I have had previous disputes with them when sending CDs in mailers as they try and charge the parcel rate and not the cheaper letter rate. If they relent and allow mailers to be sent as letters the rates below apply: Up to 125grams $1.20 plus $1.25 mailer = $2.45 for 3 CDs (No jewel cases) Between 125 - 250 grams $1.80 plus $1.55 mailers = $3.35 for 4-5 CDs (No jewel cases) Over 250 grams $3.00 plus $1.55 mailer = $4.55 for 5-6 CDs (No jewel cases) If you would like both CDs and LPs mailed out in the same parcel, please mention your requests in all threads. I also have a set of electronic scales which might be useful to calculate weights for anyone interested in keeping costs down. Additions to the sale. If I can manage the time I will also try and add more lists of items for sale although they will not be categorized into their various genre. You are more than welcome to reserve as many as you want and request deferred shipping if required until all lists have been uploaded. Condition of discs. As mentioned earlier, the discs will for the most part be in great shape although I cannot possibly check all surfaces before despatch for any unusual blemishes, dimples or marks. I have spent some considerable time checking each disc and while this has been purely visual, I believe by pre-cleaning most of them already on my RCM, any issues should have become more immediately visible. I have almost completed most of my lists and will have them ready to upload to Marc shortly. Please keep an eye out for them and take advantage of what I am sure will represent one of the best opportunities to buy some really collectible music you are likely to see. I know that I could easily offload many of these collectible records on ebay / Gemm or other sites and make more money however, as I feel more connected to the SNA community I feel it may be more beneficial to restrict the sale to SNA members only. I know a lot of other SNA members who bought records from me before were amazed at the quality of the discs so please dig deep, treat yourself to an early Christmas present or three and make someone smile again. With my sincere thanks in advance for your support. Greg My friend has no idea this project is underway so I must request people respect his anonymity. A donation will also be made to SNA upon completion of the sale. 15

progladyte Posted October 25, 2013 Author Posted October 25, 2013 (edited) MAJOR UPDATE TO THE RECORD SALES LISTS - SOME BAD NEWS FOLLOWED BY SOME REALLY GREAT NEWS After some frantic phone calls today and after some midnight Googling for Dental Clinics in Thailand I have been gutted to discover the inordinate amount of complexity and rigmarole required to send my mate overseas. I discovered that these dental tour operators only provide the means by which a patient can chose for themselves, which hospital and which doctor they wish to use, all based upon testimonials supplied by former patients, the veracity of which might be difficult to prove. Requiring a variety of X-rays, doctors referrals and all manner of supporting documentation would really mean the surprise never eventuated. In addition to that we are presented with the potential risk if something goes wrong. If my friend was reluctant to travel to Thailand for the treatment, all money paid would be forfeited. This is an unacceptable risk for me. I was also advised today that my friend does not have a passport (nor a drivers licence for that matter) so to suggest to him out of the blue, that he needs to apply for one, would be really letting the cat out of the bag. I was hoping this would be a total surprise for him. I also discovered the potential cost for a full set of inserts to emulate what a lot of us take for granted was far more expensive than I was lead to believe. So much for a few mates pooling their resources. Finally, a very wealthy benefactor, who I met recently and whose assistance I was hoping to obtain to help defray costs has proven to be unlikely as he is confronted with all manner of proposals all the time and simply ignores them. I was advised not to approach him for any reason. I think I was being a bit too optimistic to expect this here but hey, you have to give it a shot. Based upon this news I must admit I was somewhat shattered as I was hoping to inject some more efforts to ensure this project reaches finality. NOW FOR THE REALLY GREAT NEWS I spoke to some of my mates today and based upon the above and to ensure we can keep control of the project locally here in Australia, we have decided to opt for something that: A. Is much cheaper, B. Carries a local guarantee of quality with properly registered professionals, C. Ensures my mates can afford to contribute without them feeling they need to sell the farm. D. Ensures we won't lose deposits or bookings for a service that may not eventuate. E. Ensures he won't need to fly back to Thailand in the future if things went wrong. F. May be available at a discount to the normal rates if they were approached in the right manner. After some additional research and more phone calls later today, I am therefore really pleased to announce that we have decided to pay for a full set of top and bottom dentures instead along with the removal of any remaining teeth or parts thereof prior to fitting. All of this treatment can be performed near his home. These phone calls revealed the whole project can be funded for so much less than the overseas option. I am comfortable with that. To help matters along even more I intend to offload any of the unsold CDs to the people at my workplace in exchange for either a straight-out purchase or a personal donation. My other friends have also confirmed they will circulate a flyer (which I will create soon) requesting some additional support by way of any personal donations. These will be with people I know and some I don't from my home town. Finally, by taking this alternative option, I believe there will be some funds remaining which I intend to use to fly my mates up to the Sunshine Coast to have one hellova piss-up and get together over a very LOOOOONNNNNGGGGGG weekend. When we get together, it gets ugly, there is much frivolity, much humour and straight forward good old fashioned mateship. I'm looking forward to seeing my mates again as I only catch up them once in a while. As the outcome of this intended project has taken on a totally new direction, I realise there may be some SNA members who might feel somewhat peeved as they may have made a purchase based upon the original, more permanent overseas option as discussed at the beginning of the thread. If anyone does feel that way and wishes to cancel their orders, I can fully understand that decision and will accept full responsibility for being too presumptive with my expectations of this project being completed overseas. I really had no idea it could be so complex and difficult to control. If, as I am sincerely hopeful you will still feel, I'd like to ensure this project reaches finality and say a big thanks for your continued support. Some SNA members have also sent me various personal messages asking if they could make a straight out donation without accepting any records or CDs in return. While initially reluctant to accommodate this and being cognizant that my other mates from home will be seeking donations from their other friends, I have finally relented and decided to provide an option for people to make a personal donation as well if they choose. I have a spare bank account (not the one in Switzerland and certainly not the one in the Bahamas) that has sat idle for some months and which has a zero balance that could be used for such a purpose. If any SNA members therefore wished to make a donation, however big or small, the account details are as follows: BSB: 084-846 Acct No. 79-906-7256 It would also make sense to record a specific reference number for your deposit should the need arise later to trace the benefactor. While I appreciate some members might prefer to make their donations anonymously, it would help me to isolate LP purchases from donations if a unique reference number was used. Again, I must confess to being blown away by the huge response to the sale and thank you all for your interest in my collection. It will be sadly missed. Kind regards, Greg BTW - I also discovered today that my friends father is actually still alive. I thought he had passed so sorry for any misconception. BTW V.2 To ensure all participants become aware of the latest situation, I feel it best to insert this section into each sale list. Sorry for the duplication if you read it twice. progladyte Posted October 26, 2013 Author Posted October 26, 2013 (edited) WOW! I have just been sent the most amazing message and have requested permission to post it now. ********************************************* Hi Greg. Bank transfer done $50 - you probably won't see it in your account until Tuesday. I think the change in direction is in fact a good one on at least two bases - I would be much more comfortable having it done in Australia and secondly dentures are probably a better option than fixing severely damaged teeth. With the latter he will have more ongoing maintenance, possibly a remaining discomfort both physically and with self confidence about how they look. With dentures they last a long time require less maintenance I think than our own teeth and may well give him the confidence to smile without embarrassment and to eat better which is important too. The downside to dentures is that he will experience pain and discomfort upon removal of his teeth and probably it will take several weeks for the swelling to go down so that they can properly fit the dentures. But in the longer run I personally think it is the better option. As to your credibility mate it takes a lot of guts and heart to release something that is important to you to help out a mate like that - it's called love - "“Love is the will to extend one's self for the purpose of nurturing one's own or another's ... growth... Love is as love does. Love is an act of will -- namely, both an intention and an action. Will also implies choice. We do not have to love. We choose to love.†M. Scott Peck. I was in a giving mood when I offered the donation with your story coming alongside the bushfire down south. I call it a gratitude attack. I haven't changed my mind. You will feel like a million dollars (no pun intended) when your plan comes to fruition. At its best it will give your mate more confidence and gratitude in his life to think and feel that his friends are true ones who would sacrifice for him and maybe even the contributions of many who didn't even know him. I hope that is the way it turns out - keep us posted. Yours sincerely, (Name withheld upon request) ****************************************************** Can I get some other people's feedback about the change in direction PLEASE??? I fear I may have alienated some people but hope I still have plenty of support for this. Thanks Prog. Edited October 26, 2013 by progladyte
