Guest Multidimension Posted October 21, 2013 Posted October 21, 2013 Item: Teflon and Air Dielectric Low Capacitance Interconnects with WBT NextGen RCA Plugs Location: Cheltenham NSWPrice: $190 a pair Negotiable.Item Condition: 9/10Reason for selling: No longer used. See Below.Payment Method: Paypal, depositExtra Info: I have various lengths of these super-low capacitance un-shielded interconnects for sale. A pair of each. They each have WBT NextGen RCA plugs soldered in place using WBT solder to Cardas thin rectangular cross-section enamelled copper solid cores which run through parallel Teflon circular cross-section tubes. The fairly flat ribbon-like copper cross-section leaves plenty of air inside the tubes for ultimate low capacitance between the conductors. There are 6 pairs. Approximate lengths are as follows (plug tip-to-tip): 107, 106, 99, 67, 46 and 35 cm. The braids are the expensive (higher melting point) type with the white trace. The longest ones measure 21pF! Twenty One Pico Farad! Open to offers, but say something like $190 for each pair. I can split them up. That’s less than the price of the WBTs. Note: Like any unshielded interconnect these will hum unless their input end is connected to a source or a pre-amp. These were subjectively compared with Nordost Valhalla interconnects (also unshielded) in front of a pair of Wilson Benesch speakers (over $100K) and I could not hear a difference, however everyone else in the room said mine were better. That was some years ago. Since changing my own systems over to active multi-amp set-ups, too many interconnects were required and mostly of longer lengths than these (and I ran out of the Cardas copper anyway), these have been in the cupboard collecting dust. Guest Multidimension Posted October 23, 2013 Posted October 23, 2013 (edited) I have received numerous enquiries of which this one is typical: Hi. Would these be suitable for connecting a DAC to a preamp? I'm confused as to the benefit of them not being shielded. To save me answering over and over, here are my views and I am open to be rebuked since the frequencies in question are probably ultrasonic/inaudible. But that never stopped the super tweeter salesmen. The lack of shielding is a compromise. Anyway here is my answer: Yes. They can be used anywhere that analogue ICs are used - not digital. The only benefit to the lack of shielding that I know of is the dramatic reduction in capacitance which attenuates the very high frequencies. The downside is possible hum pick-up if placed alongside high current power cables for example, and the possible pick-up of RF. In the years that I used these ICs I never noticed any of it, unless the input end was disconnected from the source to remove the source impedance. Nordost Valhalla for example needs to be used with the exact same considerations. .... By "high current power cables" I mean say the power lead connected to a Class-A amplifier. Actually come to think of it, I probably would not use these into a Class-A amplifier anyway for the stray magnetic fields around those generally. Hey I've built Class-A amps and they're a pain to get quiet. Cheers, Ian Edit. Just for comparison on the how low the capacitance is on these: The longest one (107cm) measured 21pF. So that's less than 6pF/ft including the plugs. Try to find that! BTW my meter is fine - I use it to match caps when building active crossovers and other nerdish acttivities.
