JeffK Posted October 21, 2013 Posted October 21, 2013 I purchased a Shanling SCD-T200 SACD player from a guy on eBay in December 2008. It has just given up the ghost (appears to be blowing fuses) and I would like to get it repaired. I've always wondered if it was originally bought in Australia or was a "grey import" and initial enquiries indicate it was the latter. For this reason the distributor will not repair it which is fair enough. In another thread someone asked for repairers of a Marantz vintage amp in SE Qld and the responses included Robert Cudmore - Caboolture - has anyone got a phone number or address for him. EQ electronics AV Digital If any forum members have other alternatives I would be pleased to know. Thanks, Jeff
Guest JohnA Posted October 21, 2013 Posted October 21, 2013 Sorry Jeff, cant really help, but am surprised the distributors wont repair it. Even though it may be a grey import, you are not asking for warranty work, but paid repair work. I am sure though any good tech should be able to repair it. Good luck

WhakPak Posted October 23, 2013 Posted October 23, 2013 Send it back to China for repair, I think the factory is in Shenzen...

JeffK Posted October 25, 2013 Author Posted October 25, 2013 Thank you Willow and others for your help. At this stage I've dropped it into Hi-Fi Mart in Toowoomba - IIRC they sell/used to sell Shanling and have at least some if limited expertise. I haven't convinced myself it was indeed a "grey market" import and hope to follow it up further. Jeff
georgehifi Posted October 25, 2013 Posted October 25, 2013 Jeff being a grey import it maybe a 220v one and the 240 we have could have done damage to the tubes/heaters the rest of the player woud be ok as it has regulators for eveything else, but the tube do not. Pull out all the tubes, replace once again the fuses that kepp blowing and turn on the unit without the tubes in place, if now the fuses don't blow you know what's wrong. Cheers George 1
Chewbacker Posted October 25, 2013 Posted October 25, 2013 Hi Jeff I had my shanling MC3000 repaired (laser assembly replaced) by the Clay that builds the PDX units for Mike Lenehan here in southport GC. Cheers Russell
JeffK Posted November 7, 2013 Author Posted November 7, 2013 Repair quote came in today. Requires a newly made transformer and other bits $750! Been playing my Sony XA5ES CD player in place of the Shanling - it has a slightly rough sound; more sibiliance and hiss - might be the cobbled together setup though. I will try to fix it up tomorrow.

Leon Posted November 7, 2013 Posted November 7, 2013 I haven't convinced myself it was indeed a "grey market" import and hope to follow it up further. Jeff Jeff, did you confirm from the previous owner if it was a grey market unit or not? Leon
JeffK Posted November 8, 2013 Author Posted November 8, 2013 Jeff, did you confirm from the previous owner if it was a grey market unit or not? Leon No Leon I have not been able to contact him. I have sent an email to his eBay account and another to his email address. The latter has not bounced but there has been no reply. His eBay identity appeared to stop being active in mid 2009 about 8 months after I bought the player. Since my player failed I have noticed that there is a small boss on one side of the unit directly opposite and the same shape and size as the headphone socket. The boss has a transparent disc inside through which I can see a small black disc about 10mm diameter containing the word "OVERSEAS". Jeff
Sir Triode Posted November 8, 2013 Posted November 8, 2013 Good luck getting parts from Shanling directly. There is a unit sitting in my tech's workshop that cannot be repaired because Shanling does not have parts for it.
Leon Posted November 8, 2013 Posted November 8, 2013 Jeff, Australian delivered units all had "Australia" in the little badge except for the very first models. So this shows it is a grey market one, sorry... The transformer is available however as the repaired told you. triode12, what model and what part? Is it a grey market unit too or Australian model?
Sir Triode Posted November 8, 2013 Posted November 8, 2013 (edited) Have to find out - will get back to you. Does it matter if it is grey market - can't techs just buy the part anyway? What if someone migrated here from China and wanted to get his Shanling CD player he bought in China serviced? Edited November 8, 2013 by triode12

I thought it was imported but thought I'd just ask about the disc to check.
Leon Posted November 9, 2013 Posted November 9, 2013 As a rule we do not work on grey market units because of different power supplies running lower mains voltages which can cause overheating due to the compact housing, different internal components than proper export models (UK, Germany, Canada etc..) and dubious origins - one customer bought one supposedly brand new in Singapore but it was actually four years old already. So far there hasn't been an Australian unit we haven't been able to sort out... But we had way too many ongoing faults and problems with the grey market ones, we decided not to touch them... That doesn't mean we won't try and source parts if we can. 1
JeffK Posted November 9, 2013 Author Posted November 9, 2013 Yes I fully understand your position on that Leon.

After many hours work over the last several days I think I've finally fixed the "buzz" reported. But I don't really know what I did. Because changing every element of the system except cables made little difference.
JeffK Posted January 4, 2014 Author Posted January 4, 2014 Managed to get the Shanling fixed. Reinstalled it today. Buzz may have returned - will try and sort it tomorrow.
betty boop Posted January 5, 2014 Posted January 5, 2014 (edited) ~ Oops Hope get sorted ! Edited January 5, 2014 by :) al
JeffK Posted January 5, 2014 Author Posted January 5, 2014 I should clarify - the buzz is not related to the Shanling. The buzz first appeared when the Shanling was away from the system for repair. 1
Astrolug Posted January 27, 2014 Posted January 27, 2014 Dreadful thing happened, a power transformer on my Shanling SCD-T2000 blew up. Fizz, pop, dead - it might have been electrical spike, don't know. My question is, does anyone know if a power transformer can be repaired/rebuilt? I wonder if this is a similar situation to JeffK, above, costing $750 for a newly made transformer and other bits? Seems like there are experts on this thread who know a lot. Will be very grateful for any advice. PS mine was not a grey import - I purchased it through the Adelaide dealer, in 2007. Shanling SCD-T2000.tiff
JeffK Posted January 27, 2014 Author Posted January 27, 2014 OK Astrolug. First up I'd get in touch with Leon... Leon GrossSoundlabs GroupPh. (02) 4627-8766 Mine was a power transformer and related components and the repair cost finished up being $480. I understand the inner transformer and the outer transformer are different and I've forgotten which one mine was. Ill try to find out and let you know.
