Kaynin Posted January 11, 2023 Posted January 11, 2023 (edited) I built this house and this room was originally multi-purpose, but soon became the movie room. It's for movies, tv series and FTA shows, and big games of footy, cricket and the UFC. It now stands as a 7.2.6 system. A big shout out to @betty boop and @Quark who provided excellent advice and guidance along the way. All walls and ceiling have extra sound insulation in the form of acoustic bats, and the hollow core double doors replaced with solid core. The result is an excellent sound reducing effect. I then went from light coloured beige walls and white ceiling to chocolate brown, and eventually a black matt ceiling. This made such an improvement to the on screen image that I could never go back - In-ceilings painted black with a spray can - I have blinds for window reflection control, and window shutters on the outside for light control. but started with hand winders. This was far too cumbersome, so the handles were removed and motors installed - Then came the mounting of the wall speakers and cabling runs for all speakers. This took two of us a couple of days, but we took our time which is what I prefer considering the wall paint finish shows any marks just by looking at them - When all the speakers were installed I had Paul Spencer from @Red Spade Audio attend and measure the room. He explained where the issues were and advised on sub-woofer placement for best performance - I then upgraded from a JVC X500 projector to the new NP-5, and went from a Grandview 16:9 120" screen to the Majestic 16:9 125". A beautiful product, but thankfully I had help (thanks again @Quark) because the Majestic was a nightmare to install. The mounting and assembly system has a lot to be desired. The Grandview was so much simpler and, therefore, better in this area. Put it this way, I wouldn't want to put one together again. I originally had a 7 seater L shaped lounge, which was cramped for space. This time around I was a spacious and comfortable 3 seater from King furniture. I love this lounge and, being a metal frame, will likely just re-cover this one when the time comes rather than buy a new one again. Kaynin Posted January 11, 2023 Author Posted January 11, 2023 (edited) So I've been working on this room for 10 years, and this is where it's at. I'm in a very happy place and don't expect any changes for a long time. I've enjoyed each upgrade, whether small or large, and haven't been disappointed. I think that's mainly because I listen to those on this site who have been there before and/or are in to this hobby more than me. My lounge room has also under some changes. That started as 5.1, and is now 90% 2 channel. I've got a bit to go, mainly upgrading the dac/streamer and TT. You can view that here - Edited January 11, 2023 by Kaynin 2
Quark Posted January 11, 2023 Posted January 11, 2023 Have had the pleasure of seeing/hearing both systems and very impressed! Those PSA V1800 subs in the HT system rock!!!!! 1
Kaynin Posted January 12, 2023 Author Posted January 12, 2023 (edited) Lol, yeah, the twin 18's drive through you! The amount of ambience they add is extraodinary. Edited January 12, 2023 by Kaynin
blybo Posted January 12, 2023 Posted January 12, 2023 Fantastic result. Well done. You have given me some great ideas for my new build, including massive subs We found when we created our home theatre room each part of the room painted to make it darker made significant improvement to projector image contrast. I had to paint my skirting boards and cornices though, it was like they glowed white when the rest of the room is dark. We made the whole front almost black but the rear 2/3rds a very similar colour to your room. Have you considered wrapping your speakers too? We are considering that same couch for our new build but it will be multi function with large TV rather than projector. I really like the way you've set it up with a 2 and 1 seater joined. I might do something similar but make the single seat non reclining but with a chaise cushion. 1

Thanks Neil, it's nice to be in a space that I can enjoy and don't have any hang-ups about this or that for a change. The white speakers came about because the fronts were in my living room. When I started to move towards completing the HT room I considering selling them so, in part, I could go darker. I just wouldn't get enough for what they're worth, I didn't see the point in selling them. In the end I said I'll stick with the white and if it's problematic deal with it later. I find the only issue I have found is the centre speaker dead under the screen, as it's raised for ear level but that puts it closer to screen. I solved that by buying a section of black velvet and getting a dress shop to tidy it into a rectangle. I just don't find the other speakers to be an issue, so I'm happy to leave them. If you have an inclining for subs, then don't hesitate! I've found they take the ambience to a whole new level. Yeah you can't go wrong with King furniture. After I bought the HT lounge I replaced my old suite in the living room with a King as well. They're so well made. It's nice to be able to stand on the back of it to get to the projector! I know @Marc had similar experiences when comparing reclining mechanisms in other lounges, and King was the smoothest. I found the same, it's just beautiful to use and sit in. Mine are the 800mm wide seats, which is ample space. My previous lounge was $13,000 and crammed in, I ended up hating it. The black table in the middle slides out for remote control storage. You can get pockets on the side of the arm rests, but over time they'll stretch the fabric. I prefer the storage table. Yeah if I moved I'd have no issue going back to a multi-purpose room and downsizing to a tv with surround system. My stereo is a different story, I can't go backwards on that, but I'd still get an excellent movie experience on a smaller budget. With your experience from your last room you'll put together a very nice system. In many ways the convenience of an un-complicated set-up is to be appreciated. Edited January 12, 2023 by Kaynin 1

Even my piano black centre channel put reflections on my screen so I have a piece of marine carpet that sits on top too 1

My new room (when we get the keys in Feb) is a little wider than my current room at 4.6m vs 3.9m. I've sat in a leather one at Kings in Nunawading but not sure it's supportive enough. I'm going back on Saturday to sit a bit longer. We would probably go for the suede type of material Kings do called Futuro or something like that. My Warrick Macrosuede chaise lounge suite I have in my family room is still going strong after 20 years and multiple boarders, children, cats and dogs, so would hope for similar longevity.
gillmaverick Posted January 12, 2023 Posted January 12, 2023 Great Job Mate.....Absolutely love what you have done....I bet it sounds sensational.....Watch DUNE 4K and smile all the way....Congrats 1

As you no doubt know they're basically modular lounges. The arm rests that I went with at either end have pockets, they're different width to their standard arm rests. If your room is 3.9m wide then you'll have plenty of room, depending on any clearance issues with doors. My last two lounges have been leather, I'm over it. I find the material I've gone with on both are warmer to look at, and touch. They do a water repellant treatment. I thought it wouldn't be much chop, but I've spilt water on my lounge and it literally beads and rolls away. Well worth the investment with kids and animals. 20 years from a lounge is as good as it gets I'd imagine! 1

Kaynin Posted January 15 Author Posted January 15 Some time ago I have Paul Spencer calibrate the audio in this room, and today I had Tony from @Clarity Calibration attend to calibrate the vision, so finally everything is dialed in. I had calibrations done before, but this was the first time with Tony. Simply SD and HD profiles were created and the projector will switch between both when it detects the relevant content. Pixelation was aligned, which made a huge difference in sharpening up the image, which was very soft out of the box. Here's some before and after data - 6 1 1
betty boop Posted January 15 Posted January 15 well done Kaynin, this is no doubt icing on the cake, for what is a lovely room and system. No doubt a lovely feeling too, with everything dialled into perfection to be able to sit back and enjoy to the best ! 1
Kaynin Posted January 15 Author Posted January 15 @betty boop yeah spot on Al, the best feeling to know I'm getting everything out of the gear. Tony said that I'm now getting reference quality images, which is great to know I'm seeing what was intended. Also, the bottom line is simply if you notice any improvements, so I sat up for a while last night looking at scenes that I'm familiar with and was over the moon at what I saw. It makes you want to go back and re-watch your favourite movies. Enjoy Tony attending at yours today, I can't wait to see the results. :) It's very easy to see why he's so popular. His attention is detail would satisfy the fussiest customer. 1
