Addicted to music Posted December 11, 2022 Posted December 11, 2022 The good old trusty Victor 4 stroke just blew up. Something inside broke and won’t crank. It was bought from HN from a friend who got me staff discount. That was 25yrs ago! It’s done schools , neighbours and multiple 600-700m2 blocks. Died yesterday before it did a rocky 400m2 block and an over grown medium strip. I have to stop being nice when people asked me to do there overgrown lawn! Looking at petrol only becuase there is no way to top up an electric mower in the middle of nowhere! Doing a 400-700m2 block will take at least an hr and 20mins. I hear the ozito battery last about 40mins and needs at least an hr to charge, not into this!
PeppyBeachChris Posted December 11, 2022 Posted December 11, 2022 So long as you don't buy the unserviceable rubbish from Bunnings you are half way there. According to my esteemed and aged small engine mechanic, most of the engines in rotary mowers are Honda even if badged Briggs and Stratton so you can't really go wrong. Buy from a mower shop, not a hardware store and it will see you out. 1
buzz lightyear Posted December 11, 2022 Posted December 11, 2022 (edited) I had same problem My 20yr old mower was stuffed . I ended up going the Tesla option lol. Stihl battery powered mower best thing I’ve done . Also went the edge trimmer same way. I don’t have a big yard does a very good job can’t complain. One benefit don’t need to worry about fuel just have a back battery and charge when finished. Edited December 11, 2022 by buzz lightyear 1

Wimbo Posted December 11, 2022 Posted December 11, 2022 @Addicted to music If you want something thats grunty and manoeuvrable, get a Honda or similar from a Mower store. Keep away from WEF crap. 2

Yeah, use your Local mate. Looks good.
Pigpen Posted December 11, 2022 Posted December 11, 2022 We have all Honda 4 stroke gear and none of it has ever missed a beat - just remember, with a 4 stroke mower it is a bit of a learning curve from a 2 stroke, but once you get the hang of it, so much more convenient. 1
Full Range Posted December 11, 2022 Posted December 11, 2022 Same thing happened to me So I went 36V battery mower then added a 36V trimmer and chainsaw Please note that I have a small lawn area of a combined 50 sq meters Very happy with it and it’s fit for purpose Now I am in agreement with the above posts Honda or Briggs engine for best performance and 4 blades on the underside and a mulching feature is also nice
Kaynin Posted December 11, 2022 Posted December 11, 2022 All my gear is Husqvarna, quality gear but not over priced. I agree, petrol is the way to go. I’ve had my mower 11 and still stars and runs like a dream, FWIW.
metal beat Posted December 11, 2022 Posted December 11, 2022 (edited) We just replaced our 30 year old Honda. Still works fine, but wife wanted a self powered lawn mower https://powerequipment.honda.com.au/models/lawnandgarden/mowers/hrg466-petrol Works great and the Honda will outlive you. I stand to be corrected but the only thing they have in common is the word Masport. Different models.
t_mike Posted December 11, 2022 Posted December 11, 2022 I have a Flymo, but a normal 4 stroke rotary mower. It has a 5.5 hp Briggs and Stratton motor, and it isn't self propelled. Being almost 30 years old and not missing a beat, I agree with others on sticking with a quality 4 stroke. Keep away from modern 2 stroke mowers, they use a single crankshaft bearing which just doesn't hack it. Total junk. 1
The Fez Posted December 11, 2022 Posted December 11, 2022 Do not buy anything from bunnings. Do not consider electric rubbish (unless you cut grass over a maximum of 5m2) Purchase only commercial grade 4 stroke mowers from a reputable supplier. You will need to increase your budget, if you are serious about your lawns. 1

Different models. going to check both places out. Looks like they have the same motor, cutting length is different. Doing the research, the support is mediocre for the Brigg and Straton. Looks like they find every excuse under the sun to not provide warranty

Wimbo Posted December 11, 2022 Posted December 11, 2022 I thought you might know. Can't mention it here. Just Google it.
Addicted to music Posted December 12, 2022 Author Posted December 12, 2022 Enquire about getting the Victor fixed. No wonder it’s a disposable society, $200 to do an inspection that covers spark plug and oil change. It’s $230 to do a 15k service on a Toyota RAV4 Also booked out to 6wks out after new year…. Didn’t know mowers were that in demand for servicing…. The lady was nice enough to say that even the parts for a mower this old could be hard to source. I’m going to have to really reconsider the way I provide freebies …..
Addicted to music Posted December 17, 2022 Author Posted December 17, 2022 Almost bought the Honda for $900 with a 170cc engine until I noted that there is no manual throttle....damn! Luckily I didn’t pick it up, disappointed it came to this as it had an aluminium deck. The other thing is that in the manual it needs to be taken back for servicing every so many hours of operation, possibly for warranty reasons. Also extremely disappointed that none, yes none comes with a snorkel so the inlet is attached to the handle; lots of gripe on the internet about air filters getting clogged because all they use now is a sponge! And it’s close to the action. Majority comes with auto choke so there is no primer, again many complained about not starting and the choke was stuck. Warranty was also mediocre as no one would honour it when things broke or no start. Absolute disappointed in what I’m reading and it looks like most manufacturers have turned to cheap manufacturing.

You will have to spend a tad more to get a manual throttle Honda. I've been using or should I say abusing one of these for a few months now. Tough little bugger. https://powerequipment.honda.com.au/models/lawnandgarden/mowers/hru196# Edited December 31, 2022 by ArthurDent
Addicted to music Posted August 6, 2023 Author Posted August 6, 2023 After multiples attempt to have this thing fixed, Finally found someone In Werribee who did the deed! Charged me $160, I gave home 180 because that’s all I had and didn’t give a rats on change! This old guy that had alcohol on his breath that I didn’t care whether it was fix or not guaranteed that it would not be a problem, not holding a lot of hope I would have left it with him to take advance of spare parts. Little did I realised that after 2wks an unexpected phone call to say to pick it up. I was rapped! As my brothers advise you better have it fix because where you’re mowing it isn’t forgiving on any new mowers And I agreed!

I've got one of these and it hasn't missed a beat in 10 years. As we have just moved to 1.6 acres it doesn't get used much now except a small lawn around the pool. Everything else in on a ride on now. Despite what you may have read there will be thousands that don't post of their problems because there aren't any. Human nature 101. 2
