dqtl74 Posted August 26, 2013 Posted August 26, 2013 So I've been reading around a bunch of audio related forums and the general consensus is that a pair of active monitors are generally the way to go for superior listening quality. Unfortunately I have zero experience regarding them so I have no idea what brands or models to look at. I have around $300 to spend and am mainly looking at them for all around computer use (music/movies/games). I understand their bass isn't all that great but fortunately I'm not really a basshead. Thanks in advance.
Newman Posted August 26, 2013 Posted August 26, 2013 That's a pretty tight budget: you might have to look at the Behringer MS40, or a little bit over, the Phonic P5A. If you have a stereo amp lying around, you might find the Alesis Monitor One Reference Mark 2, a passive speaker, for $300 might beat the above by having a bit better bass output. OTOH that brings you into Usher S520 territory for passive speakers -- a safe bet, albeit I think the Alesis bass is less in need of subwoofer augmentation.
L J T Posted August 26, 2013 Posted August 26, 2013 Behringer Truth would be slightly over your budget and would by recommendation at that price point.
colinm1 Posted August 26, 2013 Posted August 26, 2013 pmc and atc both have active small speakers, and they have bass!! 2nd hand market may get you a pair at this pricepoint
dqtl74 Posted August 26, 2013 Author Posted August 26, 2013 Thanks for the replies guys. L J T is there a specific model of the Truth series I should be looking at?
L J T Posted August 26, 2013 Posted August 26, 2013 Try these http://www.djcity.com.au/pair-b1030a-behringer-active-monitors 1
LogicprObe Posted August 26, 2013 Posted August 26, 2013 Behringer Truth would be slightly over your budget and would by recommendation at that price point. I agree with this. Best value for money but beware............you may hear more than you bargained for after crappy computer speakers!
henry218 Posted August 26, 2013 Posted August 26, 2013 have a look at this YAMAHA http://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/vaucluse/audio/yamaha-professional-studio-monitors-msp5-pair-/1025283219 JBL http://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/strathfield/audio/jbl-lsr-2325p-studio-monitors-pair-/1026401129 TANNOY http://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/sydney-region/dj-gear-lighting/2x-tannoy-reveal-501a-60watt-speakers-available-22nd-of-july/1023836784 good luck
dqtl74 Posted August 26, 2013 Author Posted August 26, 2013 Thanks to everyone who replied. I looked into the Behringer Truth range and the B1030A and B2030A are both similar in price. Is one "better" than the other?
Newman Posted August 26, 2013 Posted August 26, 2013 The 2030 has a bigger woofer and bigger amps and is meant to cost a bit more. 1
maxspl Posted August 26, 2013 Posted August 26, 2013 (edited) pmc and atc both have active small speakers, and they have bass!! 2nd hand market may get you a pair at this pricepoint ATC's cheapest and smallest active speaker was the SCM10-2A , rrp in 2007 was over $5000aud. If anyone ever sees a secondhand pair for sale for $300 let me know and I will be onto them like a seagull onto a chip ! Edited August 26, 2013 by MarkT 2
