ThirdDrawerDown Posted August 23, 2013 Posted August 23, 2013 I am stuck in outback Queensland but at least my accommodation has the ITM Cup on TV. Tonight I flicked it on to find Otago were playing Waikato for the Shield the Shield There is only one Shield. Everyone knows what it is. My father, now nearer eighty than seventy, said, "I remember when we lost the Shield. It was not long before you were born. I thought, "we'll get it back soon." But it's never happened." At last. Otago has the Shield. After 56 years of waiting! Be careful out there. Rains of frogs may occur, Murdoch may have decided he doesn't want Abbott as his puppet, hell may well now have frozen over. It happened in my lifetime. And I saw the game, too! That is my bucket list completed. I guess I'll have to look at the back-up list now, the one that has things like "$45k Tannoys" on it.
norpus Posted August 23, 2013 Posted August 23, 2013 I'm just back from the club, left recording at about 35 mins. Otago ahead but Waikato coming back fast Back home and Waikato score a perfectly good try on 42nd minute of first half. Goes upstairs and gets called for a forward pass that no way it was. Sheesh, Waikato stiffed, controversial Just about to watch 2nd half and hope that disallowed try was not the diff That said, I am pleased for you 3DD as I'm a scarfy from way back 1
norpus Posted August 23, 2013 Posted August 23, 2013 Wow, 7 points in the end. Waikato would have reheld it if the TMO had have awarded the try Oh we'll, best to share the log around. Onya big O, enjoy the next month of parties:)
ThirdDrawerDown Posted August 24, 2013 Author Posted August 24, 2013 Ah, but Waikato had a couple of nasty shoulder charges not penalised, could have been a player down for 10 minutes. The head-high penalty against Otago was also a dubious call. Refs make about 600 decisions per game. I nowadays don't sweat this stuff as long as long as they are consistent and the luck goes both ways when poor decisions are made. "Scarfie" - now that's a badge of honour! 1
norpus Posted August 25, 2013 Posted August 25, 2013 (edited) Fair minded response 3DD, I cannot disagree - wish Kearnsey et al had same approach Yes, great salad days in Dundee circa 1980 - I'll be visiting in December sponsoring a conference so will get to see what has replaced 'the Cook'? Thank goodness Carisbrook replaced with the fab new indoor stadium. Great move and will be appreciated by challenger fans during the next log defenses Edited August 25, 2013 by norpus
bzr Posted August 25, 2013 Posted August 25, 2013 Bugger, Hamiltons my home ground. Ah well, at least your dad will be pleased as punch.
ThirdDrawerDown Posted August 25, 2013 Author Posted August 25, 2013 Ah, the Stadium that Bankrupted Dunedin! I think it's about $9k of debt for every ratepayer. Ah well, at least the organisers got knighted. 1980? I have a boot "Toy Love: Live at the Cook" from that year. It's a ripper! This site needs a "In praise of the Dunedin Sound" thread.
norpus Posted August 25, 2013 Posted August 25, 2013 Hehe Dunedin Sound, it wasn't known as that at the time I recall our 'Chem Club' social club hired The Chills for a Union hop mid 82 - they were pretty good and we even made some money out of it. They played at the Ori (in Clyde st where I flatted) later that year. Well I think I remember...
norpus Posted August 25, 2013 Posted August 25, 2013 Some good itm cup games again this weekend The battle of the bays was a ripper
Willco Posted August 25, 2013 Posted August 25, 2013 1980? I have a boot "Toy Love: Live at the Cook" from that year. It's a ripper! This site needs a "In praise of the Dunedin Sound" thread. B***ger the City that gave us "Mother Goose" and Baked Beans! Save us Willco
ThirdDrawerDown Posted September 4, 2013 Author Posted September 4, 2013 Willco, I will take that unwanted album off your hands! One of the weirder glam rock/novelty rock crossovers. "Mother Goose" and Baked Beans!
Willco Posted September 4, 2013 Posted September 4, 2013 One of the weirder glam rock/novelty rock crossovers. Well I suppose that's one way of calling it --I see the Log only sat for a week in the heather-- its off to Magpie territory Willco
norpus Posted September 4, 2013 Posted September 4, 2013 Ah mate, but everybody in Dundee touched it that week I heard I'll be down that way in December for a bit of nostalgia, can't wait. Although evidently it was sleeting today and snow due!
