Guest JohnA Posted August 20, 2013 Posted August 20, 2013 Hey guys, looking at adding a remote volume control to a preamp, what would you guys recommend
andyr Posted August 20, 2013 Posted August 20, 2013 The best volume pots IMO are TKD; I believe sell a motorized one ... however, AIUI, you then have to provide a digital circuit to provide the 'up' / 'down' signal. Why the need for volume control from your seat? Regards, Andy
tuyen Posted August 20, 2013 Posted August 20, 2013 Most modern preamps/integrateds use the motorized Alps Blue. The TKD might be of higher 'quality'. I say might, as I have not tried the motorized version, but have played with a few TKD pots in the past. http://www.partsconnexion.com/digital_abbres.html Good luck!
tuyen Posted August 20, 2013 Posted August 20, 2013 More options here, including motorized stepped attenuators! http://www.bentaudio.com/index2.html
Gordon Macfarlane Posted August 20, 2013 Posted August 20, 2013 Hey guys, looking at adding a remote volume control to a preamp, what would you guys recommend John , drop Mick an email to find out where he gets his remote volume kit from. I think Earle also offers remote volume so he may be able to offer you something

Why the need for volume control from your seat? Regards, Andy i have tried to live with a non remote pre and just couldnt do it. I find i tend to listen at low volumes, but every now and again, when i song comes on that i must simply turn up, i dont want to be getting up. I find i do adjust the volume a fair few times during a listening session, so dont want to be getting up every second song, bad enough i have to get up every 4 songs to flip the record over Most modern preamps/integrateds use the motorized Alps Blue. I was also told the alps blue are what most use, and was what i was going to get. I was then told by someone that they were not very good, so thought i'd pick a few brains on here. Also thanks for the link mate John , drop Mick an email to find out where he gets his remote volume kit from. Will do so.
Addicted to music Posted August 20, 2013 Posted August 20, 2013 Hey guys, looking at adding a remote volume control to a preamp, what would you guys recommend John, I have built a pre that has a remote control pot in which I have programmed it to a remote, if youre interested you can borrow this until you find something that's suitable to your budget. There are a number of options out there, however if I were you take it from someone that has experimented with pots fornthe last 20yrs, I would stay away from any "normal mechanical pot". I would go contactless, see also George HIFI, he is a SNA member here who uses photo sensors to attenuate, the other is digital control integration via chip, like what is used in the top of the range Marantz, and finally like someone has pointed out relay stepped attenuation. PM me if you're interested.
