This is a general information question more than anything. To highlight my newbness.

These are Tannoy or Chartwell PM110's. If you look closely, the centre of the drivers is open.

What is the benefit of this, and is it any good compared to conventional dust cap style drivers?

Looks very quirky hey. I thought the added benefit of a dust cap (other than to keep dust out of the motor) was to increase the cone surface area and thus push more air (desirable).... will be interested to see what others think.

Possibly only a cost saving exercise by Tannoy. Would they have used the sabe cones for dual Concentric drivers at the same time?

could be for controlling breakups or its just the same mids which has dual concentric on it (to safe costs using the same mids for different models)

accuton slice the cones for controlling massive breakup for their ceramic hard cones, scan slit its cone on revelator.

Dust caps prevent iron or steel particles getting into the gap between the voice coil and the inner magnet pole and causing rubbing,

The drawback is that they enclose a small volume of air that the cone has to pump against. Removing it allows the cone to move much faster.

You'll often see DIY dust cup removal then phase plugs mounted directly onto the centre pole piece on full range drivers to prevent beaming improveh top end frequency response

I think they belonged to a man who led a frustratingly lonely existence. Cigarette baby??

Oh dear..there's the gutter again....

Benefits: No trapped air behind the dustcones. Although modern drivers like Seas would have an open rear structures anyway.

Drawback: Less surface space Sd, which reduce sensitivity. Also the danger of foreign matters entering the hole.

Great point Ian, Have you seen the Zu Audio drivers with their milled phase plugs?

That's classic, Darren. Like the way you think, keep it up.

Cheers Dave.

That's what the lonely mans friends said to him, while the speakers quivered in a corner.

Bill help me!! I am fully guttered. A youth spent watching Benny Hill and The Goodies has affected me forever.
