roh008 Posted August 14, 2013 Posted August 14, 2013 Hi All, Am really struggling with stereo imaging with my Osborn speakers. I have put them in similar place to my old speakers (slightly further out from rear walls) and didn't have too much issue with getting vocals slap bang in the middle. Currently it is slightly skewed to the left. EDIT: (However, just now listening to Tim McGraw - Southern Girl I think.. after slightly toeing in the right speaker a bit more it seems to have improved.. could be the way I am sitting though? is that even possible? 1) Can I have recommendations of vocal tracks which are mixed with the vocals coming slap bang in the middle. Best way to test Then 2) Ideas for ever so slight repositioning of speakers (at 45kgs each it's a bugger and I have the spikes on them) also my wife is out so if I can do it before she gets back then play dumb if she asks have they moved I can just say no.. no. Thanks Roh
Krispy Audio Posted August 14, 2013 Posted August 14, 2013 Get a couple of sets of furniture sliders for under your spikes, then get your wife on her hands and knees (lol!) sliding the speakers around until you hit the spot whilst you sit in your chair. Or do the sliding yourself depending on your wife's mood/sense of humour Even with speakers of the same brand and similar specs, I find I can need significantly different positions in my room for each of them. 1
robin-hobart Posted August 14, 2013 Posted August 14, 2013 Got a mono switch on the amp? (all the oldies had them). Or a mono recording. Ideal for this sort of setting up. Or swap the speakers (all 45 kg of them) L to R - see if imaging changes.
Jventer Posted August 14, 2013 Posted August 14, 2013 Roh It is a bastard to get this right while you are alone and with spikes on them. Please be careful with the spikes. I would not recommend doing this when you are in a hurry. You are going to get different answers. I have listened to Eclipses in Greg's house/showroom and he does not toe them in. With my reference's I need to bring them 50 cm or further into the room. I am normally not toeing them in, although according to my wife the best position is toed in and the one more than the other one. When I put a lot of effort into it I did what Cameron from Krispy recommends. I was nice though. I got my wife to listen while I moved them around. I have the spikes on modded furniture sliders. (In the beginning I just had pieces of cardboard or mats under them to move them). Once you have an ideal position there are many methods to remember where it is, like masking tape etc. I use photos on my iphone which works well as I have a tiled floor. I set my speakers using: Ballad of the Runaway Horse - Jennifer Warnes (Love the sliders as the speakers have a spot where they stand day in and out because of SWMBO and for real listening I slide them into the position I like them)

cheekyboy Posted August 14, 2013 Posted August 14, 2013 Sounds like they may be out of phase? Have you checked polarity is correct on both? Cheers, Keith
ArthurDent Posted August 14, 2013 Posted August 14, 2013 Got a mono switch on the amp? (all the oldies had them). Or a mono recording. Ideal for this sort of setting up. Mono recordings are the way to go, I use Dusty in Memphis to balance vocals, but failing that and lacking a mono switch, these things do have a use... http://www.jaycar.com.au/productView.asp?ID=PA3570 1
roh008 Posted August 14, 2013 Author Posted August 14, 2013 Will find a good track to test them first and get my another couple sets of ears in to double check I am not going crazy first.
cheekyboy Posted August 14, 2013 Posted August 14, 2013 NIce pics..............swap one side and see if they image. Cheers, Keith
roh008 Posted August 14, 2013 Author Posted August 14, 2013 NIce pics..............swap one side and see if they image. Cheers, Keith won't damage the system? speakers or amp?
Krispy Audio Posted August 14, 2013 Posted August 14, 2013 Polarity - a good suggestion. Check both speakers, and also your interconnects. I once had a pair of speakers whereby I had connected everything according to their binding post colours, but it still sounded average. For the sake of experimentation I changed polarity on one speaker and all was right. Turns out it was a manufacturer error with the nuts on the speaker terminals.
Krispy Audio Posted August 14, 2013 Posted August 14, 2013 won't damage the system? speakers or amp? No

Krispy Audio Posted August 14, 2013 Posted August 14, 2013 What happens Roh is that if you change polarity on one speaker, then when the in-phase speaker plays the cone moves forward (away from the basket) and the out-of-phase cone moves backward. So you can see how this will affect the sound if they are not both in the same phase.
roh008 Posted August 14, 2013 Author Posted August 14, 2013 If invert both speakers what would that do?

cheekyboy Posted August 14, 2013 Posted August 14, 2013 If invert both speakers what would that do? You'll stay the same with that.............just change one and see if they image properly. Cheers, Keith
ArthurDent Posted August 14, 2013 Posted August 14, 2013 (edited) If your speakers were out of phase then you'd have bigger problems than vocals "slightly skewed to the left". There are phase check tracks available, seriously doesn't everybody one of these... Or you can use online phase checks such as this (and no doubt others)... http://www.audiocheck.net/audiotests_polaritycheck.php The best way to setup L/R imaging is with a mono source, mono switch or previously mentioned adapter. roh008 Posted August 14, 2013 Author Posted August 14, 2013 Can someone listen to Adele Make you feel my love. Tell me where the vocals come from... I think I am confusing myself.. Swapped one speaker set around sounded wrong. Put it back tried the other one and doesn't sound wrong just different..

Yeah, Ken, I've got a couple of phase check CDs, but the OP's description sounded like they may be out of phase. Could be a cotton bud in one ear and everything will image okay, or maybe it isn't the speakers and he has a problem with ICs............I don't know! Happy to leave it to you blokes to sort out! Cheers, Keith
roh008 Posted August 14, 2013 Author Posted August 14, 2013 (edited) Thanks Ken! We are in phase according to that link you sent. I guess my big red and black sheath helps.. Main reason I got it in the first place. Edited August 14, 2013 by roh008
roh008 Posted August 14, 2013 Author Posted August 14, 2013 It is literally 30cms to the left of centre the speakers are 3.5m apart. 1
