To run my speaker cables under the house along the timber joists. The distance from the Monoblocks to each speaker is about 3meters line of sight.

Does anyone know any options for rubber grommets or something similiar to what they use on office based desks where the cables go through a grommet style? The floor is timber and I dont want any nasties coming up through them ;)

I plan to place one under my hifi rack for the speaker cables to go down through and then pop them up under each speaker, the cable I use is quite small and thin and with the floor spikes there is enough room to bring it out under the speaker and then behind onto the speaker jacks.

Cheers

I use these - http://www.jaycar.com.au/productView.asp?ID=PS0291 - to send a few cables through to a computer and a few things that sit just on the other side of the wall to where my system runs. Might be secure enough?

For industrial enclosures where cable runs through a wall into the great outdoors they would normally use what is called a 'cable gland', basically something similar to this -   http://www.jaycar.com.au/productView.asp?ID=HP0704 - hardware stores would probably have similar stuff but jaycar was just the quickest place I could get some examples to link to.

I run all my surrounds speaker leads under house then up walls.

Don't have to come up through the floor. Typically come up wall cavity and the use a wall plate and feed through to speakers :)

grommet

or

use longer interconnects with the monoblocks next to the speakers to get rid of the speaker cables

or

put the amps under the house too for the ultimate minimalism

I thought about grommets like that Nada but didn't think they made them thick enough to use for a timber floor, they're more for alu/plastic panels, thickest panel those ones do is 4mm, most timber floors are a touch thicker than that ;) If they make them thick enough to wrap around a timber floor board then that'd be an okay solution and just oversize them a touch and give it a dab of silicone to seal up once the cable is through and connected.

Best idea yet but you're still left with visible interconnects running to the amps but a hell of a lot better than using longer speaker cables just so you can hide them. Bit of deja vu about this?

interconnects unlike speaker cables, can be run under carpet (ribbons ideally) or easily routed inside a wall or under the floor if you can take the connector off one end....

The brush plate looks good....now to find one in a dark color. Grommet may also be a better approach, smaller hole, less opening area for anything else to get through..I dont want to cut the speaker cables for use on plates and potentially degrade the signal

It's an even better suggestion then :)

Hey Ozcal, na mate I haven't. Have you?? I'm not so sure they are suited to my musical tastes. I'd like to know what they replace the 242 with..

silicon sealer will allow the smallest holes to be drilled and keep the ants at bay

or go naked with xeo for the true cablephobe

Good ideas all round ... hiding cables... and shortening speaker cables.

I use the same thing as hocho ... although I was cheapskate maximum and took to a $3 blank wall plate with the hacksaw  (and I needed it to be a big hole).

I have my entire system in one room... and then the speaker cables go out through the hole to the main room.     The solved the WAF issues we were having to do with room too small... or seen another way = system way too big and very much too messy.   She was Very skeptical at first ... but now it is considered one of my greatest moments.

This all meant I had to have the system directly on the opposite side of the wall from the speakers.... to keep the speaker cables under 4m.

One day I will build some (proper)  "active" speakers with some amps inside them....    one day, I'm still learning.

Run the cables in conduit, then there is no access for beasties

Doesnt solve the issue when going through the floor... Its ok, ill use a grommet, a very tight fitting one

Nope not heard them yet either. The passive Akubarik has just been released and it replaces the 242.

Couple of guys on the Linn forum have compared the passives using your amps to the actives and preferred the passives. :)

Ive always thought thats a great idea.  It not only de-clutters the listening room and improves your sex life but also gets the waste heat out of the living space in summer and isolates the amps from vibration.  Good results all round.

There are pop-up cable warts you know. Similar to the ones al has linked to. Exactly the same mechanism is used for pop-up power points. Search terms would be pop up powerpoints/comm pop-ups. I found them on a few sites in Oz, I think jaycar does them and I bought mine off ebay from China and then my local sparky called me a d ickhead for not asking him as he gets them from clipsal and they're current issue not some cheapskate bullshite like I   bought  .

You just get your pest control guy to put a dab of cocky/spider/ant paste on the inside just the same as he does on your kitchen cupboards and shelves and dishwasher  and fridge every year...simple, end of handwringing.

Ahh, ill go and check out Linns site...and read the reviews on the forum.

Thanks Al, and thanks Luc, I know a guy @ Clipsal so ill see what he can get me.

Cables are going to get reterminated by Krispy Kables in prep for the ducts...

Have a look through the Clipsal catalogue - they have a range of floor boxes and you can usually mix-and-match the contents.
