Milo Posted August 11, 2013 Posted August 11, 2013 Hi all, came across this photo of a carpark in London taken in 1963. What can you identify here? Did you drive any of these? Memories? For me, there is an Austin A90 in the front row, my father loved that model. It’s from this article here: http://www.bbc.com/autos/story/20130809-car-spotting-london-1963 1
Darryl Posted August 11, 2013 Posted August 11, 2013 Yeah me too!. I can pick the easy stuff like Minis and Beetles. I think there's a Citreon in the third row near the right hand edge. These care are a bit before my time
Darryl Posted August 11, 2013 Posted August 11, 2013 And it seems that people back then were able to park their cars much better than some drivers today can!!!!!!!
Willco Posted August 11, 2013 Posted August 11, 2013 I'll Take the Austin Healey 3000 in the second row! Willco 1
Grumpy Posted August 11, 2013 Posted August 11, 2013 It's great to see a carpark where no 'bullyish' 4 wheel drives have taken up more than just their space. I can see a few VW's, a couple of Morris Minors, a few Mini's, some ford Anglia's and probably some rovers and wolsleys and Humbers.
Batty Posted August 11, 2013 Posted August 11, 2013 (edited) The citroen is the D type, There is a Rover in there too, my dad had the Rover 90. The only one parked on the angle looks like a Renault Alpine Dauphine. Edited August 13, 2013 by Batty
robin-hobart Posted August 11, 2013 Posted August 11, 2013 At least 4 Ford Anglias. Coupla Vauxhall Victors. The youngsters must be scratching their heads.... Reminds me of a classic Sid Snot (Kenny Everett - those under about 40 ans can Google) sketch: Sid was stopped one day by 'the Fuzz'. They asked:- "Where you going, boy"? He replies ..... "Vauxhall". "Where you bin?" He replies ......"Soufall" [Cockney accent required here - i.e. Southall]" "What you got in the bag?" Answers - after a pause and a look at the camera - "......Nuffink!"
Guest Muon Posted August 11, 2013 Posted August 11, 2013 Hillman Minx? I think. Was my sisters first car, built like a tank and had the crank start option that came in handy a few times
emesbee Posted August 11, 2013 Posted August 11, 2013 Ah, 1963, the year I came to Australia from the UK as a 7 year old! The 50th anniversary of our arrival in this country is coming up mid September (no celebrations planned, but I might down a couple of ales. ) I obtained my drivers licence in 1972, and my very first car that same year was a 1961 Vauxhall Victor. I'm fairly sure I can see at least 2 Vauxhall Victors in fairly close proximity a few rows back on the far right hand side. One is a front view (row 7, far right, dark colour). There is a vacant space to the left of that car, with another Vauxhall Victor facing the other way in row 8 (appears to be a lighter colour). There may be others in the photo, but its a bit hard to tell as you get further back.
robin-hobart Posted August 11, 2013 Posted August 11, 2013 What about just upper right of centre? With vacant parks either side. I reckon that's a Victor too. Coupla Sunbeam Alpines in there too. I mentioned to Milo earlier that these cars had character! But, unfortunately, nearly all of them (possible exception of the VW beetles) were utter crap.
Dustin Posted August 11, 2013 Posted August 11, 2013 For me, there is an Austin A90 in the front row, my father loved that model. My Dad had an Austin Westminster at one time. He raved about the 'Blue Streak' motor and It was actually fairly quick for it's time . . . in a dangerous 50's kinda way. 1
Ralph Posted August 11, 2013 Posted August 11, 2013 My Dad had an Austin Westminster at one time. He raved about the 'Blue Streak' motor and It was actually fairly quick for it's time . . . in a dangerous 50's kinda way. We had one of those (Austin A95 Westminster) when I was little. Big (well for a kid anyway) and smooth with leather seats- luxury, particularly after the A40 we had.
emesbee Posted August 11, 2013 Posted August 11, 2013 What about just upper right of centre? With vacant parks either side. I reckon that's a Victor too. That was actually the first one I spotted. It could well be a Victor, but if so I think it is probably an earlier model, judging by the radiator grille. They made some cosmetic changes in the later model. As well as a different grille, the roofline was cut a bit higher at the back, so that the back window was a bit larger. The two cars further back appear to be the same model, and look very close to the car I used to own.
Addicted to music Posted August 11, 2013 Posted August 11, 2013 Jeeeesus, I think I was conceived in 1963, and the beetles are older!!!!
Ken Posted August 11, 2013 Posted August 11, 2013 Hmm, Must be a sign of old age, but there are a lot that I recognise in that photograph; Vauxhall's - Victor, Cresta, Wyvern & Velux; Ford's - Zodiac, Zephyr, Classic, Anglia's (three styles), Popular's (two styles), Cortina Mk I; MG-A Austin 1300 Wolsey Riley Hillman Singer Triumph Herald's Morris Oxford's Austin Cambridge's MG Magnette Mini, Mini Traveller & Mini Van Not really sure, the car 4 behind the Citroen is a Jag MK 9 or an Armstrong Siddeley Shaphire? Ken 1
davidsss Posted August 11, 2013 Posted August 11, 2013 Geez Ken you're good. I'm with Grumpy, look at that car park and imagine the number of trucks, sorry 4WDs, which would be there today. DS
Tony M Posted August 11, 2013 Posted August 11, 2013 Not really sure, the car 4 behind the Citroen is a Jag MK 9 or an Armstrong Siddeley Shaphire? IMO, it's definitely a Jaguar, Ken. I called it as one of a pair of Mark 7's before, but I think your Mark 9 is a better bet, The 7's 8's and 9's were all the same shape, but the 8's and 9's had a one piece windscreen as this appears to have. 8's were relatively rarer, so a 9 is more likely.

robin-hobart Posted August 12, 2013 Posted August 12, 2013 All us 'elderly' oxygen thieves.... But I have a query relating to the dark car front row third from left. I had that down as a Ford Prefect. And can't see any Triumph Heralds that I'm sure of. Can someone please clarify?
danter Posted August 12, 2013 Posted August 12, 2013 Blast from the past eh! Being a kiwi, I grew up with so many of these. The PA Vauxhall was a favourite as one of our earliest rides for the boys off to school (we all got a full licence at 15 back then). The 'Dark 3' as we called it (the zephyr /zodiacs of the time) as they were heavily favoured by the islander population. Ford Consul over in the corner and what looks like a Humber Super Snipe in one the rows further back.
Ken Posted August 12, 2013 Posted August 12, 2013 Hi Robin, I think that "the dark car front row third from left" is a Ford Prefect (or a second style Ford Anglia or Ford Popular) I can't remember the differences. Two Triumph Heralds are; the car with the inset stripe/flash on the far right of the fourth row, and, the light coloured car to the right of the Mini Van on the ninth row. Ken
Tony M Posted August 12, 2013 Posted August 12, 2013 (edited) All us 'elderly' oxygen thieves.... But I have a query relating to the dark car front row third from left. I had that down as a Ford Prefect. And can't see any Triumph Heralds that I'm sure of. Can someone please clarify? The shape is similar to the Prefect, but the heavy, horizontal grille bars and absence of rear door handles make it an Anglia, which was the 2-door version. Edited August 12, 2013 by Tony M
