The Grif Posted August 9, 2013 Posted August 9, 2013 Hi Everyone, I'm looking at putting together a Luxman based system. Love the dark wood, old school look. I currently own a Luxman WL-550 tuner (some info here: http://www.fmtunerinfo.com/luxmanhistory.html) and have just purchased a Luxman PD-284 turntable (http://www.vinylengine.com/library/luxman/pd-284.shtml). Side note: whats with the prices of these on Ebay, got mine for $400 odd and then one sold for over $800 a few days later? Am currently looking at a Luxman SQ503x integrated amplifier to add to it (http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/161040477417?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649). Will it go well with the other components? Also, what standmount speakers (up to about $1000) would you recommend for this system. Room is about 5 x 4 m (bedroom) and quite bright and will be listening to must types of music at low levels. Thanks for your assisstance.

ny3 Posted August 10, 2013 Posted August 10, 2013 I own a Luxman SQ505 which is similar to the model you are looking at (alas my unit is gathering dust in the garage). When I bought mine I refinished the cabinet with danish oil and a dark stain (see photo). Be aware that because of its age of the amplifier you are looking at it will probably need some maintenance. There is evidence that some of the capacitors on mine need to be replaced. This is expected given the age of the unit and the life expectency of some of the capacitors originally used. Also, the contacts on all the switches on mine needed to be thoroughly cleaned to work reliably. I used DeoxIT D5 and it worked very well. Good luck.
