muzzagruzz Posted August 2, 2013 Posted August 2, 2013 Hey Peeps, I called Amber Technology today and they are no longer distributing Michell turntables in Australia. I'm trying to find a place in Sydney that has the Tecnodec for me to listen to. Neither Len Wallis nor Sydney HiFi at Castle Hill has it in stock. Amber Tech doesn't have any left Anybody know who the new distributor is, if there is one? Or, anyone know where else they are sold. I want to compare it with the new Avid Ingenium. Cheers, Tricky
josh0571 Posted August 3, 2013 Posted August 3, 2013 Might be worth flicking Michell a quick email if you haven't done so already as they say Amber too.....
muzzagruzz Posted August 3, 2013 Author Posted August 3, 2013 Hey Josh, Good thinking and yes, I have done that. I went into Audio Connection today and I seriously liked the VPI Traveler. It's just gorgeous. Still, I'll do the right thing and compare all the turtables in the same price bracket. Cheers, T
josh0571 Posted August 3, 2013 Posted August 3, 2013 (edited) The last time I went to Audio Connection (on Para Road Leichhardt) they had the full gamut of VPI decks. Pretty impressive. Let us know what Michell says... Edited August 3, 2013 by josh0571
muzzagruzz Posted August 4, 2013 Author Posted August 4, 2013 Shall do Josh. Hopefully, they will reply this week. I'm looking forward to seeing the Avid Ingenium and Michell Tecnodec. The VPI Traveller is the more conventional looking of the three but I do love it's looks. Guess I'll be selling my Rega P3-24 someday soon. T
Steam Posted August 4, 2013 Posted August 4, 2013 Trickster What sort of price are they asking for the traveller? I'm interested but no idea where to get one in Victoria.
muzzagruzz Posted August 4, 2013 Author Posted August 4, 2013 Hey Dr Nick, The Traveller is $2300 w/o cart. I believe Audio Connection in Sydney is the importer/distributor. Give them a call or flick them an email to find out where you can find them in Melbourne. T

T Hi Trickster The Traveler looks fairly conservative compared with the Avid and Michell but VPI's are very nice decks. They have a good following with a few guys here on the forum. Have you heard it yet? Do you know who stocks Avid in Sydney? Whichever of the three you go for will hopefully be a step up on the P3-24 for you... Cheers Josh
betty boop Posted August 5, 2013 Posted August 5, 2013 always loved the michells if didnt have little kids and my lovely rega probably would have a nice michel gyro dec. ps if looking for the circa $2.3k with cart, have you considered the thorens TD309 tri balance ? http://www.carltonaudiovisual.com.au/?q=node/view/1507 http://www.stereophile.com/stephenmejias/the_thorens_td_309/
muzzagruzz Posted August 5, 2013 Author Posted August 5, 2013 Hey chaps, I've not heard the VPI yet but will do when the time comes to buy. I will then listen to all three if I can. Sydney HiFi at Castle Hill stocks Avid decks. However, they don't have the single arm version of it, only the dual arm. I think they may be getting one in though. Yes, the VPI does look conservative in comparison but I love it's look. Plus it has a great arm. To be honest al), I didn't consider or even think of the Thorens deck. I guess I'm after something a little bit more special than a Thorens. It may be a good deck but I'm not sure it could eclipse a VPI. Any ideas on what a mint condition Rega P3-24 W/O cart would be worth? It has the outboard power supply and it's in the black finish. I'm not canvassing it in this thread, I genuinely would like someone's opinion on its possible price. I won't be selling it until I sell some excess speakers of mine first. By the way that's going, it could be a while before getting a new deck. Bloody HiFi, it's the worst hobby to fall for. T
muzzagruzz Posted August 5, 2013 Author Posted August 5, 2013 Oh, I've read that the AC synchronous motors are better to have in turntables. Apparently, they run quieter and are I believe are more accurate in terms of speed. The Michell Tecnodec runs a DC motor and is not particularly quiet in operation. I still want to listen to this deck though. Any thoughts?
wadiman Posted August 5, 2013 Posted August 5, 2013 I have a Gyrodec with the DC motor and it's fairly quiet - even quieter with the dustcover (an option with the Technodec?) down. In fact, the unit is almost inaudible with only a very little whir about 3m away (dustcover not in place). In normal use I suggest that you wouldn't hear it from the listening position in the inter-track segments.

It came with an external TT PSU and Rega Elys 2 cart. I do think that I got it at a good price and that prices are going up for turntables. Edited August 5, 2013 by Telecine
muzzagruzz Posted August 5, 2013 Author Posted August 5, 2013 Ok, thanks Telecine. That's a bit less than I thought it would get. I guess I have to expect to take a hit. Hmmm - will have to put in a bit more dosh for my next TT. Bugger!
