VA50 Posted July 27, 2013 Posted July 27, 2013 I've had a at91 on my Onkyo pl-150 for a while now and it's time to upgrade. My player is only average and lacks VTA but it has VTF and anti-skate. I've been looking towards a Ortofon om10 and the Audio Technica at95e. I prefer the sound of the Ortofon but i am not sure which one would be best suited to my player. I am also open to other choices of cartridges in the $50-60 range.
adamg Posted July 27, 2013 Posted July 27, 2013 I don't think you could go wrong with either the OM10 or AT95. The AT95 was the first replacement I bought for an old pioneer and it sounded fine. My neighbour has a Debut Carbon with OM10 which sounds pretty good too. My gut says OM10.
Guest Hensa Posted July 27, 2013 Posted July 27, 2013 The AT95E is an excellent cartridge for the dollars and would get my nod but agree that you can't really go wrong with either.
VA50 Posted July 27, 2013 Author Posted July 27, 2013 I like the sound of both of them but i personally prefer the Ortofon. The question is which one would be better suited to my tone arm?
Guest Hensa Posted July 27, 2013 Posted July 27, 2013 They are equally well suited to your arm. They are similar weight, similar output and require similar tracking force. If you think you may prefer the Ortofon, go for it!
VA50 Posted July 28, 2013 Author Posted July 28, 2013 Thanks for the help guys. Also because my TT lacks VTA i am stuck with being able to shim and change mat thickness. With the current mat and no shims the at91 sits pretty much in the right spot. From memory the om10 was a taller cart meaning i would have to use a thinner mat. If it is taller by how much compared to at91?
