metal beat Posted July 27, 2013 Posted July 27, 2013 (edited) I was on WBF and noticed one of the members mentioning he had just ordered the new Magico Ultimate IIi. At 600k, all I can say is WOW. These things are friggin HUGE. And it is horn loaded. This has been around for almost 10 years now and was Magico's first speaker from memory, so now up to v3. very envious of anyone that can afford such magnificence. if I was very rich I would much rather plunk down a shite load of $$ on hifi than a car. I guess I could do both Now for all your bah humbug expensive hifi haters that slag off Wilson for being overpriced, take a deep breath and just enjoy the pics or something Edited July 27, 2013 by turntable 3
Guest Hensa Posted July 27, 2013 Posted July 27, 2013 Holy Sh%$t, they look unbelievable! Not sure about the WAF though!

Peter_F Posted July 27, 2013 Posted July 27, 2013 Would love to hear something like this. I'll keep an eye out for a secondhand set on Gumtree. 3
Willco Posted July 27, 2013 Posted July 27, 2013 Magico's are ear bleeders at the best of times--these would probably put you in your grave. Willco 4
Luc Posted July 27, 2013 Posted July 27, 2013 The guy in the pic listening...look at his arms, he's flicking through his iPod looking for that Abba mp3 or possibly a Tina A best of track...yeah...seriously he is...
Paul Spencer Posted July 27, 2013 Posted July 27, 2013 It looks like a horn designed by a cartoonist! Did you happen to notice the low midrange compression drivers? I believe the woofers are 15" or 18" Aura drivers and the magnets on the low mid CDs are similar in size to what you find on large sub drivers. 1

What does this mean to uneducated folk - like me??
tuyen Posted July 27, 2013 Posted July 27, 2013 Japanese ALE Acoustics compression drivers, including the big mid low driver. Just that the whole driver is completely encapsulated by the support frame by Magico. 15" aura woofer. Not cheap by any means, but I would hazzard a guess this would be my personal choice for an ultimate commercially built speaker. kramered Posted July 27, 2013 Posted July 27, 2013 For those wanting a listen. The first two shots look like the room at Hong Kong's 'Sound Chamber' audio store in Central HK. I did a pop-in a coupe of years ago (in shorts and T-shirt) when on hols and they were most gracious in showing me around and letting me have a listen in every room (no mention of me being a pro reviewer so no preferential treatment there). Great collection of gear. Cheers, EK
Paul Spencer Posted July 27, 2013 Posted July 27, 2013 God damn it Paul, speak English!! What does this mean to uneducated folk - like me?? It's got big magnets. Based on the photos alone, I'd say this is a 4 way horn, with horn loading down to approximately 80 Hz. The bottom driver is an Aura sub driver. So we're looking at a super tweeter alongside the horn loaded tweeter, which is above a mid horn, with the large black top part being a midbass horn, which is horn-speak for a horn with no bass at all. To get a straight horn to work to around 80 - 120 Hz you are looking at a horn that is about a metre long. The cut-off of a horn is determined by the axial length of the horn. You can mess with the size of the mouth and throat, but you can't mess with the length. They have used a compression driver for the low-mid horn. Not many of those around. A compression driver is very much like a dome tweeter with a few things added. First, the diaphragm is larger. We add a "phase plug" that sits right in front of the diaphragm, all the sound entering a throat chamber through this phase plug. The throat chamber is generally a conical section that flares out towards the throat opening. A compression driver looks like just a big magnet, but the diaphragm is inside. Most of them have a 1" exit, but pro audio use 1.4" and 2" ones also. That low mid compression driver shown in that horn would be massive. A picture is much easier to understand:
Guest Muon Posted July 27, 2013 Posted July 27, 2013 (edited) They look as though they are about to launch at you, would be even more so in the sweet spot :o might be the pics too. Impressive looking. Edited July 27, 2013 by datafone

To think that, on Friday 19th July, we were going about our lives, consuming resources, loving, sharing, helping, earning and learning. And our future king was still three days from emerging into our little planet from the safety of his mother's private universe. When we see our tiny place in the universe, doesn't it put issue like cable directionality, isolation platforms and amplifier sonics (et al) into their proper perspective of utter irrelevance? I'd say that it does. My plea remains for greater rationality and less gullibility amongst consumers, a better sense of the reality and universality of physics throughout the universe. Alan A.
