Gordon Macfarlane Posted July 22, 2013 Posted July 22, 2013 (edited) The pictures show what used to be the dining room ,it had become a dumping room for all my spare stuff and unfinished projects. We use the dinning room once a year , on Christmas day and this year Christmas well be at my brother in laws new place. Still got a lot of work to do building a new valve pre and finishing the Class D poweramp but should be able to get some tunes happening in the next few days with my extra ,extra stuff Proposed system : Denon DVD 2900 with psu mods and Audio-gd reclocker to my souped up Satch tda1541a dac Akido octal pre amp to Connexelectronic IRS2092 Class D power amp with Linear psu Linn Katan speakers with Whatmough Tempest? sub. Monkeyboi Posted July 24, 2013 Posted July 24, 2013 Ah yes. every window needs a little cheeky monkey to add the final touch. Not that I'm biased. Gordon, the room looks great. Always good to have a second listening space. The Bakers Hill residence is getting there slowly. Added a door to the main listening cave which connects to an adjacent store room . Just need to install the new lighting, window treatment, carpeting and a new colour scheme. I'm pretty keen to hear what it sounds like with the Quads moved well away from the rear walls. Cheers, Alan R. 1
THOMO Posted July 24, 2013 Posted July 24, 2013 Gordon, Just an excuse to show off your knees? The second system looks interesting. I can imagine it sounding very musical with that front end.
Tony M Posted July 24, 2013 Posted July 24, 2013 (edited) Looks great, Gordon - why have one system if you can have two? For some reason, the room housing the "big system" looks more spacious than I remember it in previous photos. Those Gales need room to breathe, don't they? The Gale/Michi system in my study sounds OK, but I know it is capable of so much more with a bit more space to strut its stuff. Good to see your similar system is relatively unconstrained. THOMO Posted July 24, 2013 Posted July 24, 2013 You guys need to hear my Gales biamped with two Usher 1.5s. I well remember a pair of them triamped with monster Accuphase power amps at a Hi Fi show in Perth. That sound really stuck in my mind and have to say I am now getting that sort of sound. I am not sure why using multiple amps should make such a difference but it does.Much more so with the Gales than my Sonique Encores. 1

I can imagine it sounding very musical with that front end. Hi Jon , finally got the second system up and running with my Sony CDP 502ES direct to a Yam M60 power amp. Wasn't expecting much but the sound is great. I am still stunned by the quality of the Katans. The Lp12 has a warped plinth so until I can get a new plinth it won't be getting much use.

Thanks Tony. One of the lounges from the main room is now in with the second system so the main room does look more spacious. Really need to treat the main room as it is a bit echoic with so little furniture in it. A decent sized room definitely works in the Gales favour though the very first time I heard a pair was in a room of similar size and proportions to my new room and they sounded stunning. If you are looking for smaller speakers for the study I highly recommend a s/h pair of Linn Katans ( from Ebay UK)

THOMO Posted July 25, 2013 Posted July 25, 2013 Hi Jon, how do you have this configured? The original crossovers had been configured for triamping and then changed back to normal. They were far from original when I got them from Tasso. I got Jason Boyd to rebuild them and configure them split into bass and mid/treble sections and had inputs installed for each section. So one amp drives the two woofers and another the midrange and tweeter. 1
Gordon Macfarlane Posted July 25, 2013 Author Posted July 25, 2013 Great stuff Jon , can only imagine the sound My pal in the UK that I got my original 401'S from told me that someone in the UK was retailing a package with Electocampinet electronics and an active crossover for the 401's.
THOMO Posted July 25, 2013 Posted July 25, 2013 Gordon, I would love to hear the Katans some time. Small speakers can sound very musically engaging. Many miss the point point but a good one can be great.A friend has a system that uses Mission M70 MkIIs and a Rega Mira 3 amp and it gets right to the heart of the music-especially with vinyl.
Gordon Macfarlane Posted July 26, 2013 Author Posted July 26, 2013 Ah! the Mission 70's ,amazing speakers. We sold hundreds of pairs . In some ways the best speaker Mission made at the time. Your welcome to pop in any time for a listen Jon.
