Brad24 Posted July 17, 2013 Posted July 17, 2013 Ive been thinking of upgrading my turntable. Its an Amber TT (based on a rega 2 I believe) RB250 tonearm with a ortofon MC15 cartridge What should I be looking at to upgrade this set up?
wolster Posted July 17, 2013 Posted July 17, 2013 Hi Brad. Do you mean upgrading your existing deck or getting a better one? Either way, much is the budget? These clarifications might help you get some meaningful advice.
Gee Emm Posted July 17, 2013 Posted July 17, 2013 Budget? Context? Can't offer any advice without 'em.
Brad24 Posted July 17, 2013 Author Posted July 17, 2013 Budget would be around the $1500 mark or thereabouts Context??? Not sure what you mean
Guest Hensa Posted July 17, 2013 Posted July 17, 2013 (edited) Budget would be around the $1500 mark or thereabouts Context??? Not sure what you mean I think "context" refers to important additional information such as other system components, type of music listened to, isolation for the turntable (vibration absorption, etc), room details such as floor surface (important for turntables) and so on. In addition to all that, maybe some information on what you're looking for in terms of improvement by upgrading. $1500 can get you quite a bit of an upgrade, especially if you are prepared to look at second hand. Brad24 Posted July 17, 2013 Author Posted July 17, 2013 The tuntable is driven by an Emotiva XPA-2 power amp with a USP-1 pre, speakers for the fronts are Krix neuphonix Room is 5.5m x 4.5m x 2.4 high, double brick construction, concrete floor covered with carpet I listen to rock & blues
Guest Muon Posted July 17, 2013 Posted July 17, 2013 There is a Yamaha GT2000+ (Black) on hifido for 1500usd, the sale of the existing table would make up the cost of shipping and a step down transformer. Just a thought.

rocky500 Posted July 17, 2013 Posted July 17, 2013 Hi Brad, I have one you might like. You can borrow it to see if it is to your liking. Clearaudio Concept with a ClearAudio Maestro MM Cartridge. 1
Gordon Macfarlane Posted July 17, 2013 Posted July 17, 2013 A turntable with good bass control and good isolation from the environment would be a good idea with the Krix imo. A well set up Lenco GL75 , with a decent arm mounted on a rigid wall shelf would work well . A well set up s/h Lp12 on a light but rigid wall shelf would probably do a good job too.
hyper Posted July 17, 2013 Posted July 17, 2013 Quite abit in that price range, rega and project generally make great stuff in the 500-1.5k range, clear audio concept if you can find one second hand in good condition... Your choices open up quite a lot if your going second hand if your going new I would look at Project RPM 5.1 with 2m black ortofon cart (probably one of best if not best MM on the market) Yuki on eBay sells Ortofon carts at great prices. Direct from HK in 2 days. Thorens TD240 match well with Denon and audio technica carts.. Second hand I'd look for gyro SE great TT I had one until recently

Gordon Macfarlane Posted July 17, 2013 Posted July 17, 2013 What do you mean by good isolation from the enviroment? The Krix Neuphonics have a very potent bass , the turntable ,by means of suspension (springs) or high mass needs to be able to filter this out or sound quality will be impacted. Pm me if you need more info , Brad.

Just a thought. The yamaha would be a potent performer and for that price tough to beat. Looks to die for, beautiful direct drive system and from HiFiDo, you have no issue with shipping. They are superb to deal with. Cheers M
djb Posted July 17, 2013 Posted July 17, 2013 If you were in Vic I'd say call nick at audiophile who makes the amber and trade up to the funk firm With arm funk about $2k+ So sell it add it to your $1500 add a smidge
Gee Emm Posted July 18, 2013 Posted July 18, 2013 Budget would be around the $1500 mark or thereabouts Context??? Not sure what you mean I f new, you could look at Rega RP6 for ~$1500. Add an Ortofon 2M Blue or 2M Black There are other new brands in that price range eg Clear Audio, Pro-ject. Maybe find a demo unit for less $ if looking for new. A myriad of of options 2nd hand in that price range I would think. Graham
