Anyone had a Krell KSA-100?

The "ingredient" looks very naughty.

What was the original RRP? (can't find it on google, only the KSA100s)

What will it cost to do a full recap in Melbourne?

Thanks

The KSA50, KSA100 and the KMA100 monoblocks were the only great real Class A Krell's that were almost pure Class A all the way (heavily biased up into A class), and the only ones with no heatsinks as they were fan cooled through chimney stacks. The KSA100 mono's were the pick. The KSA100s was plateau biased and never sounded as good as what I call the real Krells.

And yes by now they would all need new supply caps as well as a good clean out as the dust inside would be very thick and cause them to overheat.

thanks YM. I will give them a buzz.

Thanks George for the info. Have you compared the Krell to other similar power amps?

I am particularly interested in something that's a bit warmer/ coloured.

That will be the Krells I mentioned, as they give almost a tube sound lushness without the bass bloom.

Or if you want something that is acurate, then get a s/h ME,not as forgivng to any sources that aren't quite right, more of an open window to them, you know the old saying s**t in s**t out.

I would like to add that the models after the first series - the KSA80/80B/200 KMA160/400. Were also pure Class A or heavily biased so. They were however cooled with oversized heat sinks (and sounded just as sweet if not sweeter) without the noise issues of the fan cooled models.

The circuit design of these series were almost the same as the earlier KSA50/100 and KMA100.

RRP for the KSA100 I believe was around $4-5K USD in 1982.

Then this is what you want, a pair of Mark Levinson ML-2 monoblocks, only 25watts no more, but all pure Class A into 8ohms, and stays pure class A down to 200watts at 1ohm. And each one weighs a tone.

The Krells always matched well with the earlier ARC preamps that had tube bloom/lushness. e.g. SP10, LS5.

And a Chev Malibu demo could be had for less than twice that.  As could a outer suburbs block in Perth, almost.  Damn they were expensive amplifiers!

But the Mark Levinson ML-2 mono blocks were $9000.00usd in 1977 ! You could double that here in Oz

there is actually a pair of refurbished ML2 for $4800USD on Audiogon now actually. I'm sorely tempted but no $$.

Woo-Blow me down--!--wonder who the tech was that refurbished them still 110v I presume--silver wiring--hmm maybe that changes the sonic signature somewhat--why not reinstall NOS original cabling.

Yes possibly only one of half a dozen great SS designs ever.I've heard them in the HQD system-- something that never leaves you.

Whilst the ML2 was a brilliant pair of amps. Particularly in view of the fact that they were only 30 Watts. I've listened to the ML2s a couple of times. Once with Martin Logan Monoliths and once (bridged) into Wilson WAMMs. Both times, the amps were very, very impressive, but were bested by more intelligently designed, more powerful Class A/B designs.

got the BAT VK-500 on loan.

Very warm but still very accurate. not sure about "wasting" the balanced input and punch atm.
