I remember reading somewhere, that if the DAC does not need power bit of USB cable to operate, it was possible to isolate pin 1 from sending out +5V to the DAC. Has anyone tried it? And could someone explain which one is pin 1 and what be the best way to isolate it?

An easy way to test this out, just cut a tiny bit of electrical tape and place it over the power pin (pin 1 on the USB A connector) of a cheap USB cable.

If you then try the cable with a device that needs power, and it does not work - you know you have isolated the power from the PC correctly.

Another way is to cut the shielding off a cheap cable and cut the red wire - the power wire is usually red, but not all the time...

I have tried both these methods in the past and they both work... :)

Some USB receivers in DAC's need full usb power to run, others need power to "handshake" with the PC but the other circuitry is internally powered, and some need no power from the PC at all.  It just depends on the implementation of the hardware.

Hope this helps.
