GregWormald Posted July 11, 2013 Posted July 11, 2013 I finally got a copy of this--the 2010 Hendrix family authorised re-master--and I really like it. On the first track EXP, the sounds that used to slide from speaker to speaker now actually go around in counter-clockwise circles! Not just right-to-left but behind and in front of the speakers. It's WILD! And the bass is deep and articulate in ways my old vinyl never was! Greg
caddisgeek Posted July 11, 2013 Posted July 11, 2013 Is that the orange stickered "Experience Hendrix" vinyl?
emesbee Posted July 12, 2013 Posted July 12, 2013 I've always thought this was one of the better sounding Hendrix albums.
Candyflip Posted July 12, 2013 Posted July 12, 2013 I've got the 'Are You Experienced' from the same series: this one Also highly recommended.... I don't have the system to do it justice right now, but I can tell it's a beaut underneath!
eman Posted July 12, 2013 Posted July 12, 2013 (edited) EXP is where the Stereo really has it over the Mono. Edited July 12, 2013 by E.Man

The 2010 had a sharper top end than I like. Has anyone compared the AXIS to an 'old' one or have comments about whether the 2010 AYE and AXIS have a similar sound. I know they were both mastered by Eddie Kramer but AXIS was better recorded in the first place from my research. -thanks. Edited July 16, 2013 by E.Man

Fair enough - but getting a copy that isn't scratched up to buggery is too much of a challenge for me. Some titles I just can't be bothered chasing that hard... although judging by your avatar, you would certainly be doing so.
eman Posted July 16, 2013 Posted July 16, 2013 Somehow I managed to get a US 1970s AYE that only has a couple of crackles which is within my tolerance for surface damage noise. I was having a spending spree for a while there while the exchange rate was high and before all the postage rates increased. Not any more though which is why I'm looking for clues on the AXIS. Good points for the new pressings is they are well pressed, brand new and easily available. Popmarket had the recent 'Bundle' but I've already got most of them.
ferchersan Posted July 20, 2013 Posted July 20, 2013 I finally got a copy of this--the 2010 Hendrix family authorised re-master--and I really like it. It's WILD! And the bass is deep and articulate in ways my old vinyl never was! Greg Having just upgraded speaker cables in my modest set up, I thought I'd pull out this LP. As mentioned, EXP was floating all around my speakers in a circular orbit and then the bass of "Up From The Skies" comes in, so tight and airy. The drum fills on the outro chorus of Wait Til Tomorrow just jump right out at you. As for Jimi's outro solo on Bold As Love, I remember reading Jimi saying it should sound like the clouds parting and the heavens opening, or words to that effect. I wish I could find that quote, because it really sounds like he nailed it. What a treat!
Geoff Millar Posted November 18, 2015 Posted November 18, 2015 I wore out my original Australian LP of Axis many years ago and replaced it with a US import LP which sounded, and still sounds, great. I also own the 'Alan Douglas' era remastered CD, which I think was the second version of the CD to be issued, it has less noise but has an edge to the sound which will show up with good speakers. The CD came with a booklet, free stamps, and a new front cover. Very much under-rated, perhaps because Jimi only played Spanish Castle Magic and Little Wing from this album in his shows. There was a one off "EXP" on a 1967 Swedish audience bootleg but the sound is awful, but it sounds like a nice try. If you haven't heard this one, give it a listen or ten, it's well worth it!
