blakey72 Posted July 9, 2013 Posted July 9, 2013 (edited) Thought I'd decided on a bookshelf/standmount however there are quite a few other options out there for around the same price and I want to get the best for my money. I thought I had made my mind up with the Dyn Excite X12's however these are also in the list now. Problem is I can't audition. My lounge room is 3.5mx3.5m with standard height ceilings. Here is the list I'm considering:1. Excite X162. PMC TB2i3. Spendor S3/54. Dynaudio Contour 1.1 5. Proac Tablette Reference 8 6. Paradigm Studio 20 Amp is Exposure 2010S2 Pre and 3010S2 Power amp. CD Audiolabs CD2000. Any thoughts? Edited July 9, 2013 by blakey72
Cafad Posted July 9, 2013 Posted July 9, 2013 (edited) Just to make life more difficult I think I now have a way to ship those Eclipses of mine down south for under $300. Does that mean there are now 7 choices? Edited July 9, 2013 by Cafad

Gordon Macfarlane Posted July 9, 2013 Posted July 9, 2013 Based on your other equipment choices then my first suggestion would be either the Spendors or Proac's. Spendors more neutral / Proac's more engaging . Dynaudio's have always sounded a bit lacklustre to me .
Krispy Audio Posted July 9, 2013 Posted July 9, 2013 From that list, ditto Spendor or Proacs for sure. 1
gemini07 Posted July 9, 2013 Posted July 9, 2013 I have owned both Dynaudio (52SE and 82) and ProAc (EBT), and would rate the Osborn Eclips speakers (plus the smaller standmounts) as MUCH superior to those. As you live in Vic, suggest you visit Greg Osborn, or just bite the bullet and buy Cafad's - they are undoubtedly the best of the lot and probably at a much lower price. Plus their greater sensitivity allows more flexibility with amplification. The Eclipse's are also great for home theatre. 2
maximus Posted July 9, 2013 Posted July 9, 2013 I'd also throw in Kef R series as well. cheers Frank.
Cafad Posted July 9, 2013 Posted July 9, 2013 The Eclipse's are also great for home theatre. I agree, they give good bass very easily!
mpearce38 Posted July 9, 2013 Posted July 9, 2013 would you consider Usher BE718's (shameless plug) I moved too these from a pair of Focus 160 as they were better. They are more engaging to listen too while not losing any of the detail, agree the dyns are a little on the polite side and the excite range will not play to very loud levels (i had x32s). Above the Ushers i would probably need to move to the PMC twenty.22 tried the TB2i like the open sound but ushers beat them with a more solid and robust sound i thought. The 22 however were very nice

Nothing shameful about plugging these btw. They are a fantastic speaker. Edited July 9, 2013 by blakey72

mpearce38 Posted July 9, 2013 Posted July 9, 2013 Yeah I did think long and hard about these. The bass was the only thing worrying me with these, I want something with good bottom end. Nothing shameful about plugging these btw. They are a fantastic speaker. If it's deep bass your after listen to the PMC before you buy. They play low but the presentation is different they sound really open in the mid range which makes them appear a little bass shy, but you will hear every note. Unless you have a small room or listen at low levels the x12 will run out of steam and compress when played at anything just over moderate levels. If you can find a used pair of Focus 140 should be aound the same price as new x12 and will play louder and deeper. To be honest the ushers had the best bass of the lot provided you give them upwards of 150w per channel, They need an amp with lots of control otherwise can be a little slow, I used mine with a parasound A52 and it did a good job but stepped up to bryston 4b and they reached a whole new level, same with the dyns needs lots of control to play there best. I had both my dyns and the ushers paired with a small sub which cuts in at 50hz i spent a lot of time tuning it in so blends exceptionally well i would highly recommend this 2.1 setup with stand mounts
muzzagruzz Posted July 9, 2013 Posted July 9, 2013 Hi Blakey72, I didn't see any Australian speakers in there? I'll plug the usual Legend Acoustics Kurre7's as I have them and love em to death. Go Australian! Tricky
mpearce38 Posted July 9, 2013 Posted July 9, 2013 Anyone remember the name of the guy in QLD that makes the really nice speakers that everyone raves about. I can't remember the name but know it has popped up on this forum before

muzzagruzz Posted July 9, 2013 Posted July 9, 2013 mpearce38, Are you referring to Lenehan? I understand they are excellent and people on here rave about them.
blakey72 Posted July 9, 2013 Author Posted July 9, 2013 I'd love the ML1's but a little too much above budget.

Cafad Posted July 9, 2013 Posted July 9, 2013 I'd love the ML1's but a little too much above budget. So I should avoid mentioning that I've got a pair of those as well then? I swear it's just a coincidence! Honest! Check the PM for details.
Krispy Audio Posted July 9, 2013 Posted July 9, 2013 I'll probably be back down in August if you're not in a hurry, happy to throw a few things in the boot to listen to if the timing works!
murrmax Posted July 9, 2013 Posted July 9, 2013 (edited) With your equipment i'd steer away from anything too transparent/bright and go for something like Proac, Paradigm, Spendor, PMC, etc Edited July 9, 2013 by murrmax
blakey72 Posted July 19, 2013 Author Posted July 19, 2013 Ok I'm after a floorstander with lots of bass. Below 30Hz if possible. $2k is my budget the wife informs me.....
