I've been using a Zerostat gun for the past year and not that it's broken I realise how much I needed it! I get so much static when I brush dust off my Lps with an "Anti-Static" bruch...it's ridiculous!

Looks like another hundred bucks to replace it.

I know most of you don't use this but it's the only way I've found to reduce static....

Cheers

The ZeroDust is a "bandaid" IMO ... better to not have any static to start with - which is the result when you clean your LPs with a wet/vac RCM. :)

I use a VPI 16.5 but I still get static afterwards... Although, most of the stuff Ive played post Zerostat has been uncleaned... I'll investigate further...

never had an issue with static after cleaning with an RCM.

i clean every record before first play be they new or second hand, then slip into a new sleeve.

maybe the solution you use mate??

John, I use the VPI solution... I don't get how a clean get's rid of static as it's something that builds, like a charge... The Zerostat did a wonderful job of erasing any subsequent charge of static electricity.

UM, this might seem like a silly question, how did you know the Zerostat was broken? I recently got 1 to try, and I've got no idea if it's even working.

When I squeeze and release, I feel no clicking going on. I just squeeze in, and release, and the whole thing is so smooth.

The only clue I have that it's working, is my records are silent.

In 1 extreme case, I had an old record that I cleaned using my usual method (KAB/vacuum), no joy. Then I used revirginizer on it, no joy still noisy. Then I shot it with the Zerostat, and fark me, it's virtually silent.

I suspect some environments are more prone to static than others. It doesnt take much to statically charge something.

I don't think that just looking at the LP is the whole picture when it comes to static build up on LP's.

IME:

  • Having carpet adds to producing static, particularly if you vacuum regularly.
  • I have a windows near my system and I suspect that the wind blowing the teralene curtains all over the shot greatly contributes to static build up.
  • Dusting and cleaning the system generates static.
  • Having the TT very close to a TV seems to generate more static than I noticed without the TV being there.
  • All these are compounded in warm, drier weather.

In my situation I found the zerostat to be very effective and make a considerable difference to my LP's.  I also give it a few zaps near the system after I have vacuumed and cleaned the room and system.

I normally  don't wear footwear in the house and don't get a static charge on my LP's two days ago I did wear shoes and the static went through the roof , so it may help to ground yourself . We have wool carpets over a concrete floor ,seems to work.

What I was alluding to is that the environment in which the LP's are played will have a significant effect on the amount and frequency of static buildup on an LP.

You need to try a different tactic , UM - maybe something like this, just remember to attach an earth wire to a pointy end!  :D

But  - I was always of the opinion these devices weren't to be taken seriously

I still have my 1970 s anti static gun that I use on the tape player

There is also the AKAI AC plug in type anti static device ( own one of those as well )

They work well

That confuses me also. Don't have one ATM. But when I did use it it seemed to work just fine.

Yeah, the results indicate that it works fine. To ask the question another way- when using the Zerostat, did yours click as you squeezed and released?

Mine doesnt, the mechanism is smooth. The first time I used it I thought- "geesh, I wonder if that did anything??"

Hey flemo, yes, my improvements have been considerable aswell. I read a review somewhere that suggested static can also build up in the cartridge/cantilever and that the Zerostat will discharge them too, so I shot the cart at the same time.

Amazing the reduction in noise now.

I also use it on records and around the stand area

Here is a photo of the ones I use and mentioned in my post above
