-LS- Posted June 29, 2013 Posted June 29, 2013 Hi all, so just purchased a Michell Gyrodec to partner with my Pathos classic one mk3 integrated amp. I am deciding on a few things at present.. Speakers, (going with bookshelves for aesthetics for the location) I'm looking at B&W 805 diamonds, Dynaudio SI4's and Sonus Faber Auditor cremona's More importantly for the moment, cartridge.. Was thinking Rega Apheta but not sure, would prefer cheaper if possible and need to be sold on the benefit of moving coil (sure someone will gladly do this) And above all else, I thi the gyrodec next to the pathos will look pretty different and cool so I would like a phono pre amp that is in line with the quality of the system but also looks as good Do your best, thanks in advance Lewis
tubularbells Posted June 29, 2013 Posted June 29, 2013 Congrats on your purchase, what arm went on the Gyrodec (assuming Rega?) For the price of the Apheta i'd personally be looking at a Lyra Delos as I have read nothing but FANTASTIC reviews on them so that what I am personally aiming for (or maybe a Rondo Bronze or Cadenza Red) But whatever way you decide to go its important to buy a cartridge that your proposed phono stage can drive as I have made a few mistakes in the past buying low output cartridges that were on the limit of my Minimax Phono' output level which increased the noise floor considerably. 2
pulinap Posted June 30, 2013 Posted June 30, 2013 If your phono can handle LOMC could I humbly suggest Denon DL-S1....
-LS- Posted June 30, 2013 Author Posted June 30, 2013 Looking at Icon Audio PS1 mk2 phono at present if that helps Also now throwing focal Electra 1008's into the speaker mix
wadiman Posted June 30, 2013 Posted June 30, 2013 I have a Gyro and love it. What arm do you have - that will influence your cartridge choice quite a bit. Some advice re maintenance: 1) buy a few extra belts - you'll need to change them every year or so depending on how much spinning you do - you'll know when it's time to change as the pitch will start going and it'll sound like it's running slow. 2) Get a small 'bubble' level to help you make sure it is dead level - this improves the sound. 3) Keep your eye on the oil level in the reservoir and replace every year or so with synthetic oil (eg 0w40 mobil 1). Enjoy!
Guest Muon Posted June 30, 2013 Posted June 30, 2013 For phono stage, I have heard fantastic things about the ones member lovetube builds
Chill3 Posted June 30, 2013 Posted June 30, 2013 Pathos make a very good phono stage Re cart, what music do you favour and are you a detail or warmth guy ?
-LS- Posted June 30, 2013 Author Posted June 30, 2013 It has the RB300 arm at present, actually thinking moving magnet cartridge, would like to keep it under $1000 if possible, re: phono happy to explore the options, I'll look at the Pathos, thanks and also the Electrocompaniet. Listen to a lot of jazz, blues and do like detail, cheers
