Sierra Posted June 15, 2013 Posted June 15, 2013 Just wondering if anyone has had any experiance with the GrooveTracer counter weight for Rega RB series tonearms? Has anyone used one on their Rega arm ... and if so what are your thoughts? Does it make a worthwhile difference to the sound compared to the original counter weight? In the next month I will be ordering a GrooveTracer sub platter as well as the Delrin platter and considering getting the counter weight at the same time if it's worth getting.
evil c Posted June 16, 2013 Posted June 16, 2013 I ended up buying a Tecnoweight after doing research which I have been very happy with - two weights give great versatility with different carts & have just purchased a Crimson metal subplatter on ebay. I was scared off Groovetracer with the high prices landed here but have been very well reviewed by many. Just my POV
Sierra Posted June 16, 2013 Author Posted June 16, 2013 Thanks for your thoughts evil c ... The Michell Tecnoweight would be the same principle to the GrooveTracer ... low slung to reduce centre of gravity so I would assume they would have similar effects on the sound. Did you find any noticible changes to sound using the technoweight?
evil c Posted June 16, 2013 Posted June 16, 2013 Yes - very similar with the weight in line with the cart and obviously exactly the same as used on the ultra expensive Tecnoarm. It certainly introduced better clarity, soundstage was deeper & wider & bass was tighter as well. Also love the dial in of cartridge weight on the very end utilized with sliding the weight which is very user friendly. Looks good too, bit like a pair of testicles underneath!
Sierra Posted June 16, 2013 Author Posted June 16, 2013 Sounds like it's a worth while upgade then ... thanks for your comments evil-c
Keith Anderson Posted June 18, 2013 Posted June 18, 2013 I'm going the Groovetracer as I already have the sub platter and platter from them and they are a marked improvement in sound. They may be a little more expensive than others but you can't go past the fact they are machined to the highest standard, it would be like comparing a BMW to a Holden, they are that well made. I looked at it this way, if I was going to upgrade my turntable I was going to buy the best upgrades made, so I never have to wonder what if... 2
Sierra Posted June 18, 2013 Author Posted June 18, 2013 I'm looking at it the same way keitha ... from all the comments I have read the Groovetracer components are first class in machining and finish and this is what drew me to them in the first place. I had always planned on buying the reference sub platter and platter and just wondered what people's experiences have been with modified tone arm counter weights and if it is a worthwhile modification. With the spiralling drop of the AU dollar compared to the US dollar (94c today) it's time to place that order quick smart ...
