Vinyl, CD or otherwise (?)

I've got to say the vinyl I have of Creedence Clearwater Revival's 'Cosmo's Factory' is just perfect - dead quiet, flat, clean, sounds amazing, can't fault it in any way. Only $40 too.

I don't have any of their CD's though.....

Just a handful on vinyl, candyflip, that are excellent in terms of SQ and the music is pretty good too.....................

Dead Can Dance - Into The Labyrinth

Billy Joel - Piano Man

Roy Orbison - The All Time Greatest Hits of Roy Orbison.

Beck - Sea Change

Alison Krauss & Union Station - So Long, So Wrong.

Marc Cohn - Marc Cohn

Cheers,

Keith

Actually, now I do!

Just won Queen's 'The Game' gold ULTRADISC II overnight, which is generally considered, along with the vinyl version, the best source for this recording.

Thanks cheekyboy - I have the Dead Can Dance disc as you know, and am thinking about maybe adding 'Spiritchaser' and 'Anastasis' eventually.

Joshua Tree....    they still needed to be sent straight damn back to the studio, and not let out until they had done a better job of it IMHO ..... but this is the best we've got.

Sea Change is great, but not totally my cuppa tea.

Too hard to pick one.  I don't think you can go wrong with any of the currently available titles, think they are all pretty much well regarded.  A couple of favourites:

Santana - Abraxas

the already mentioned Sea Change & Marc Cohn

Out of print, some that immediately come to mind:

Blind Faith

Layla & Other Assorted Love Songs

Hot August Night

Silk Degrees

Hot Buttered Soul

Bachelor No2 + Lost in Space

Breakfast in America (+ Crime of the Century UD though the Speakers Corner LP is way better)

Don't forget DCC/Audio Fidelity & some Analogue Productions, just about anything mastered by Steve Hoffman would be the best release of that title.

Silk Degrees - best you've heard?

Breakfast In America - I have the Simply Vinyl release... does the MOFI beat it?

I'm a keen student of the Hoffman forums already, but keen to hear SNA member thoughts.

"Year of The Cat" and " Tea For The Tillerman" are definitive. Of the dozens I have collected, my personal favorite is Bernie Krauses' masterpiece, " Citadels of Mystery".

I have Silk Degrees on AU 1st press vinyl, early & remastered CD, the MFSL UD imo is the best (& Hoffman has said he thinks the UD is the best version).  I was going to try the new LP but read some indifferent reviews.

Breakfast in America - the only vinyl I have is the MFSL, I have 3 versions on CD including the MFSL UD, the vinyl is easily the best I have.  I've not heard the Simply Vinyl or Speakers Corner BIA's (though the latter is poorly reviewed).

Let's see (vinyl only).

  • Georg Solti conducting the Beethoven 9th Symphony - fine performance, beautifully mastered.  I would imagine that the original Decca would be nearly as good, but I've never heard it. MFSL 2-516
  • Yuri Temirkanov conducting the Rachmaninoff 2nd Symphony - exhilarating performance and recording. MFSL 1-521
  • Andre Previn conducting "A Tchaikovsky Spectacular" - it is indeed spectacular, though the 1812 Overture is better elsewhere. MFSL 1-502
  • Hot August Night - my 2nd-hand copy was only recently acquired and is still quite noisy - much more cleaning required before it is back to where it should be - but the performance reproduction is excellent.
  • Don Sebesky - Three Works for Jazz Soloists and Symphony Orchestra - amazing works, beautifully recorded and pressed. MFSL 2-503

I have a few others which are not particularly memorable.

Cheers,

Warren

UDCD #593 Mastered with Mike Moffats incredible "The Gain System" Analog to Digital Convertor

Sadly they discarded it -last time I saw it, it was in Mikes garage in Thousand Oaks gathering dust!

I could've  bought it for $1k then--sad.

Although I don't have all of MoFi releases, I have most of their LP's.

They can be a hit and miss with their mastering.

The best by far of my collection is Rickie Lee Jones' self titled. One of their early Japanese pressed albums.

I remember it getting good reviews when it came out years ago as one of MoFi's better mastering jobs..

It used to go for a pretty penny dollar wise once. Although I noticed they have just reissued it not only as a normal lp but a soon to be released 2LP 45rpm version.

I'm really looking forward to Dylan's 'Blood On The Tracks' which is MOFI's newest release (last week).

Vinyl reviews on this are pretty good (not great) - still expecting it to be better than any copy I own.

Best I've heard are the two Dead Can Dance titles: Spiritchaser and Into the Labyrinth on vinyl. Some of their records I find a bit hard and bright, compared to original pressings, even if they are more detailed.

If you get the chance, try to pick up the Analogue Productions/AcousTech CCR reissue series Kevin Gray and Steve Hoffman.  Just superb and were cheap, but might be hard to get now.  Personally, I could not imagine any reissue sounding better.

I have only 3 MoFi releases on vinyl, Bob Dylan's The Freewheeling' on 45rpm sounds the best and very quiet. I later read Hi-Fi News rated the sound quality 95/100. Beck's Sea Change also has top SQ and Tears For Fears' Songs From The Big Chair is just ok.

I have the "pink coloured" MFSL vinyl edition of Sea Change, and it has outstanding SQ.

Haven't heard the black vinyl edition, but all reports suggest the pink vinyl edition is the best version available.

My copy of Beck's Sea Change is black vinyl. The SQ is very very good, if the pink vinyl is even better, it must be something very special. Love to hear it one day; )

Think you'll find the pink vinyl pressings are the same master as the black vinyl which had then ended it's 'Limited Edition' run. The ordinary black vinyl has since been given a 2nd 'Limited Edition' run (possibly motivated by the successful sell of the pink vinyl).

Just got it recently (AUS$70) - sold the MOFI ($110).

Thanks for the tip... and you were right!

Self titled LPs by The Band and The Cars

The Cars - first bought this album when I was 14, was second hand then, so it was well played. The mofi version is cleaner, but my original is fatter and has more slam

The Band - mofi is better. Great pressing of a wonderful album

I own others, but these are two of my favourite albums of all time and I know the sound of 'my' original pressings well
