evil c Posted June 12, 2013 Posted June 12, 2013 (edited) Last week I made the mistake of leaving my reading glasses on when I went to clean my Dynavector 20X2L - sort of bumped the arm as I reached out with the brush which seemed innocuous enough at the time. Closer inspection revealed a different story with the cantilever virtually bent 90 degrees with a twist Contacted JD Audio the distributor & asked if I could get it repaired either at Soundsmith O/S or here at Garrott Bros. - he was adamant any repair/replacement of tip would be inferior to the original and quoted me $883* less 20% trade in(ouch!) for a new one. * price to rise 10% shortly with devalued Aussie Tried claiming with my insurance company but they laughed at me so now the financial enormity & misery is starting to hit me! So now the question is: 1- Do I run the risk of getting it fixed? 2- run the risk of buying similar 2nd hand? ( been touched upon in another thread) -hopefully from someone here 3 - purchase something else? Any guidance would be appreciated ( please be gentle - I am still pretty raw!) Clive. Toma Audio Posted June 12, 2013 Posted June 12, 2013 Hi Clive, Dynavector still have a trade in scheme. You will get a credit for the old one against a new one. Alternatively, get in touch with Audio Dynamics Pty. Ltd.Ph. (03) 9882 0372 they bought up all of the tools from the late Garrott brothers and can rebuild it for you. If it was me; trade in for a new one, dollars permitting of course. If you want a price PM me and I'll let you know the current trade in and retail. Cheers, 2

Grumpy Posted June 12, 2013 Posted June 12, 2013 Wow! I almost fell over when I broke the stylus on my less than $100 cart. How can you or anyone deal with such a costly disaster?
evil c Posted June 12, 2013 Author Posted June 12, 2013 Periodical bouts of crying interspersed with prolonged periods of deepest darkest depression! Actually - I was so shocked not a single expletive was uttered, just another one of life's cruel tests to be overcome I suspect

Newman Posted June 12, 2013 Posted June 12, 2013 Did you see today's AnalogPlanet post by John Atkinson where he mentions "Michael Fremer ...does it (cartridge setup tutorials) in public with a video camera amplifying his every motion. At one point in one of his two packed 90-minute seminars at T.H.E. Show, he even picked up the VPI turntable he was working, ... to rotate it with the stylus still resting in the groove so the video camera could get a better view!" I'm sure that makes you feel better Clive!

Shelter Posted June 13, 2013 Posted June 13, 2013 Be careful that your hands / fingers are not to dry when swapping carts. I dropped an exy Sumiko cart, it bounced on the edge of a lower shelf and was a right off !

evil c Posted June 14, 2013 Author Posted June 14, 2013 Good news on the Dynavector - Jonathan at JD Audio advised me, ( as well as Geoff from Toma Audio- thanks, mate) that the price would be going up to $970 when current stock is exhausted. He advised just had biggest drop against the Japanese Yen in 30 years So bit the bullet and have purchased a new one - but, wait for it, he's given me a sizable discount probably in response to my recent tales of woe! And since he'd missed the courier today he is sending it Express post for delivery on Monday Can't speak highly enough of Jonathan & all at JD Audio - best service i've ever come across Will be having a celebratory drink shortly! Cheers, Clive. 2

evil c Posted June 15, 2013 Author Posted June 15, 2013 Now send the old damaged one away for a re-tip, then you will have a spare available next time. Already posted back as trade in. Already had a plan B if anything untoward should ever happen - kept my DV 10x5 which hasn't been too unbearable to listen to whilst licking my wounds Pessimist! How did you ever get to be an audiophile? Realist in my book!! 1
