welly Posted June 5, 2013 Posted June 5, 2013 Hi, I am intrigued by the Mye Stands that are available for the Magneplanar range of speakers, but the price is flat out scary. Appears that the stands are approx $1350 to Australia... Ouch! Is there anyone in Australia who has had similar stands made for their maggies? If so, how much were they and who made them?
Dr Good Vibe Posted June 5, 2013 Posted June 5, 2013 You would be able to make them for about $250 at the outside
Sir Triode Posted June 5, 2013 Posted June 5, 2013 Just to to any metal workshop and get them to make a set up for you. Like the Dr has mentioned - it would probably cost a fraction of the Mye stands cost.

I made stands for my IIIas - see pic. 1.7s would be similar, just a bit smaller. I think Dr GV is a bit naïve if he thinks you can get something good-looking made up for $250 - but maybe he was thinking of what you could knock up at home with some aluminium sections from Alcan? Mine cost about $500, from memory (quite a few years ago) - all you need is a tame "metalwork shop"! Then another $500 when I changed over to wood bases. You haven't stated which State you're located in but my guy in South Melbourne would be able to do something for you. Regards, Andy
Dr Good Vibe Posted June 7, 2013 Posted June 7, 2013 (edited) I think you got knocked up if it was $500 AR, what price do you think the steel tube is worth ? Welly if your in Melbourne and you can tell me exactly what you need and then PM me I could charge AR's old price, but that's too much. Now the steel in these cost $500. andyr Posted June 7, 2013 Posted June 7, 2013 I think you got knocked up if it was $500 AR, what price do you think the steel tube is worth ? Who said anything about steel tube? (Steel rings.) Or tubes, for that matter? Regards, Andy
Sir Rab of Everest Posted June 7, 2013 Posted June 7, 2013 Interesting. I have some acoustat panels and will be looking to have some rigid frames made in the not too distant future (maybe next year, once I figure out what configuration I want to use). So can you guys direct me to someone who could do this for me? (Those ml frames look impressive!) - r.
aechmea Posted June 7, 2013 Posted June 7, 2013 Stands as used on my previous model Maggies. Tubular steel with original feet riveted to stands. Diagonal buttress bit makes use of existing screws in speaker frame. Sand filled. Free. Father in law can do things with metal and had this stuff lying around in his shed.
Dr Good Vibe Posted June 8, 2013 Posted June 8, 2013 Ok Andy ok, sorry I was under the impression that pic was yours, right angel steel is even cheaper and yes steel tube round, square or rectangle all rings but I use a filler and it doesn't ring then. Right angle rings and you have a huge problem to deaden it, that looks too me in that pic that it's steel or if Al that will be worse. So Andy just so I'm not on the wrong path what is that structure made of ? The other option is solid high carbon steel square rod another price range altogether. Interesting had a chat with Mal the other day remember 56 , his thoughts were the same on price and you have all seen his work, you got ripped Andy at $500 way back then. Yep steel rings deaden it, and great job aechmea by the father inlaw and made at home !!!!!!!! and no $500.00 charge Rab they arn't ML there all built here in a shed been rebuilt a number of times now trying different things out and still running 10 years or more. Rab PM me if you want a hand if I can't do it there will be others who will help.

Rab PM me if you want a hand if I can't do it there will be others who will help. Mmm, from my experience/experiments, I would have to disagree with you on a couple of things, Dr GV: #1. Steel rings more than aluminium - not the other way round. As shown by: firstly, Linn who use aluminium for the Keel. This is a vast improvement over the original pressed-steel subchassis, IMO because they have been able to make it one-piece ... so the armboard is rigidly attached to the subchassis. (With the pressed-steel subchassis, Linn had to use 3 little screws to attach the armboard ... to provide a "lossy" connection, such was the extent of the ringing in the pressed steel subchassis.) secondly, I made a wall-shelf for my LP12 out of aluminium. This was simply two arms of 75mm x 75mm x 6mm angle, welded to a 500mm x 100mm x 10mm sheet of aluminium which was bolted to the wall. I copied a mate, who had made the same thing out of steel - when I lent my aluminium one to him for 6 months, while I was doing renovations at my house, he said the aluminium one rang less and was better. #2. Steel tube - filled - still rings. I experimented with 4 x 600mm lengths of 25mm square steel tube. I filled them with: mortar (ie. sand/cement/water) expandable foam lead shot sand. ... held onto the top the top of the tube and hit the bottom end with a hammer. By far the 'deadest' was the tube filled with lead shot; sand and mortar were about the same and the foam provided the least damping of all. Sure, there is some ringing in the aluminium angle I used in my Maggie stands - but less, IMO, than tube. I could probably damp it with some of that butyl/aluminium 'deadening sheets' that car audio shops sell ... I may get around to it one of these days. Regards, Andy Edited June 8, 2013 by andyr
TomAus Posted February 6, 2014 Posted February 6, 2014 I purchased a pair of 1.7's from Mcleans late last year and am now looking to upgrade the stock stands. Similar to the OP, I am intrigued by what I have read about the Mye Stands but unfortunately the price has since increased and is now close to $1500 USD. Btw, I'm very impressed by Grant of Mye Sound who has been very responsive and helpful. I'm looking to purchase similar stands locally and appreciate any recommendation in that regard.
