SuperForg Posted June 3, 2013 Posted June 3, 2013 (edited) Hi all I have a Sony turntable, PS-LX49P. Budgetest of the budget from the early 90's - It was actually part of a HiFi system, but i've soldered a 12V DC plug back into it so it's running fine off wall power. Here is my issue, the cart is gone. I don't have much money, and i'd like to get listening to my collection again - I have a few questions. 1) Is it a proprietary Sony head? If so, can the entire arm be replaced with something less.... Sony? 2) If not, where would I source a cartridge for it from? Just an OEM replacement would be great... 3) Is it even worth it? Would I be better off with say... A Pioneer deck from the 70's or something that at least takes a normal cart? The rest of my system is a Kenwood KA88 and a pair of Monitor Audio RS1's - Nothing fancy, and due to lack of funds I can't really afford to spend hundreds on it, i'd just go buy a second hand turntable. I don't know much about turntables - but I am learning. Cheers Edited June 3, 2013 by SuperForg
Tony75 Posted June 8, 2013 Posted June 8, 2013 Hello, Looks like you have either a snap in cartridge or a screw-in one. Can't replace the arm on those turntables at all. If it is a snap in, it will take one of those very common ceramic cartridges, which track very heavily and sound pretty nasty. But being Sony it may well be for an Audio Technica AT-3600 cartridge, this is a very common cartridge, and the variant that would fit a tonearm like this would have one screw to hold it in and the wires soldered onto a little sub board. I just can't see the screw hole in the photo. My advice would be if that turntable does not have any counterweight adjustment on the end of the arm I would not bother with it. To get a cart for it would be at least $30-40 and that could easily buy a second hand, not high end, but much better turntable.
