Hi guys,

time has come to make a decision on my vinyl addiction. I have an old Rega Planar 2 with the RB200 s shape tonearm.

Cosmetically the TT is very nice, I have replaced the drive belt but it still runs slow.

I have made initial enquiries as to its refurbishment, ie new motor etc. Any tips on a repairer would be appreciated.

Tips from a fellow RP2 user for a new cartridge would be appreciated too.

But of course the question of replacement then arises.

Is it better value (read better sound) to buy a new RP1 or similar, Pro-Ject Genie?

It forms part of a system as follows, RP2 > Quad Elite Pre > Quad 303 > Quad 57's or 63's.

Any heads up would be appreciated.

Cheers

If you been happy with the rega I would just put the motor upgrage kit in it and then try find cheap seconehand tone arm the newer tone arms are good for money they pop up all the time

Regarding the speed issue. Are you sure it's a motor problem? I had a Planer 2 for years and had a problem with it running slow which turned out to be the small pulley wheel pressed on the top of the motor spindle. This comes loose and so lags behind the motor only catching up now and then and very much dependent on the temperature. All that was needed was to gently pull off the pulley wheel, put a dab of superglue inside the hole, press it back down firmly on the spindle so it goes all the way, wait for a short while and then you're up and running. I've given the same advice to quite a few people over the years and in only a couple of cases was there a problem that wasn't this.

I agree with Richard above, if you like the turntable then keep it.

Thanks guys, will have a look see at the pulley wheel thing. Sure is a lot cheaper than a new tt, but am happy to spend if it's a big gain in SQ.

Cheers guys

I have read that there is a dual pulley and dual belt mod that is good for speed problems on rega TTs

The dual pully upgrade that Batty is referring to is by Michael Lim ... and from all accounts a very good mod.

Just be aware that you will loose your 33/45 speed option ,,, unless you have fitted the 24v high performance motor kit ... and are powering it with the optional micro processor TT Power supply :)

No not in my opinion.  These TT's will be a step backwards or side wards, but certainly not forward.

If you like the sound of your RP2 then IMO your next step is a secondhand Linn Sondek.  That will be a big step forward IMHO.

Cheers.

As flemo says an rp2 properly set up and tuned by an expert is a very good TT

Much better than going backwards

Someone mentioned a new arm!?

The 250 is a good arm just get it rewired if necessary.

To service a Rega turntable costs quite the money, if you don't want to spend as much money, by all means, get a new turntable, but if youre like me, wanting the best out of the vintage, you would be better off refurbishing the P2, up to you.

Thanks guys for all your thoughts, it's appreciated.

However the short story is that I have bought a Rp1 with performance pack.

Decision made due to not being real confident on finding a repair setup guy.

So soon to be sold a RP2, older type with timber surrounds.

But thanks again guys

I have on loan a Planar 3 from the late 70s, it has the R200 tonearm fitted and I could live with the SQ, but the Rock blows it out of the water with a AO modified RB250.

I'd get the 2 fixed up if I was in your position, maybe send the arm to j7 at Audio Origami for a rewire. PM him he is a member here.
