Grumpy Posted May 29, 2013 Posted May 29, 2013 (edited) Working on the Garrard 401 today trying to put a RCA and ground block on the rear of the TT for easier cable change in future and had the TT standing up on its front face. I knocked it with my elbow and it fell over onto the SME arm . Oh! Frigg, the arm tube has been crushed in at the front of the knife edge bearing and the bit that holds the anti skate 'fishing' line (yokehead) has snapped off. This part I can buy on-line I suppose, but the arm? How important is the arm tube? Will a dented one be ok? My partner told me not to do it today as I'm having an off day - I should have listened to her. Edited May 29, 2013 by Grumpy
wolster Posted May 29, 2013 Posted May 29, 2013 Does not sound good, Grumps. Poor bugger. The more experienced will no doubt chip in with assistance. In the meantime, have a quiet Coopers and try not to be too hard on yourself. Accidents happen.
robin-hobart Posted May 29, 2013 Posted May 29, 2013 Did similar myself once - albeit with a Dual turntable. Remember - The man who didn't make a mistake didn't make anything! SME parts are usually readily available - sometimes a bit pricey. If you replace the arm, you might get sufficient $$ back by cannibalising the damaged one to make the financial penalty slightly more bearable. Being who you / we are, I doubt you could really live with an unsightly or compromised arm - just won't ever be satisfying or feel 'right'. Which model SME arm was it? Anything exotic?
Warren M. Posted May 29, 2013 Posted May 29, 2013 Many years ago I shattered the bearing of a Sumiko arm. No way to recover. I feel for you!
rocky500 Posted May 29, 2013 Posted May 29, 2013 Heres one, not sure if it will fit. http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/SME-3009-S2-IMPROVED-genuine-TONEARM-ARM-WAND-TUBE-/251276123660?pt=Turntable_Parts_Accessories&hash=item3a81395e0c
tubularbells Posted May 29, 2013 Posted May 29, 2013 Ouch!!!! bit of bog and a coat of paint and she'll be as good as new...
mondie Posted May 29, 2013 Posted May 29, 2013 For farks sake Grumpy I feel for you mate, that is the kind of daft thing I would do. Hope its not too expensive and drawn out to rectify. 1
Grumpy Posted May 29, 2013 Author Posted May 29, 2013 I think it will be Simon. Spent all my TT savings on getting the new plinth done. Thanks all for the comments, especially Rocky - looks like just the thing I need .well! one part anyways.

Guest JohnA Posted May 29, 2013 Posted May 29, 2013 sorry to read Grumpy hope you get it sorted with minimal fuss and cost
David.M Posted May 29, 2013 Posted May 29, 2013 Disaster indeed, my sympathies. On a positive it could have been worse and whole thing fall to the floor. The pain will go, I dropped my record clamp the other week, landed on the HRS platform before falling onto the floor. I've got a dented HRS top and clamp, luckily I don't have a gun in the house as I may not be typing this. New clamp on the way from Switzerland & I'll swap platforms with the MPS-5 to cover the dint so all will be good shortly, no doubt you'll likewise solve things.
Grumpy Posted May 29, 2013 Author Posted May 29, 2013 It seems a knight in shinning armour has PM'd me Thanks for all the replies fellas. Checked out eBay and the parts were starting to add up gulp!! 3
betty boop Posted May 29, 2013 Posted May 29, 2013 ouch, yep know what your talking about. some days I can be a blundering clumsy and end up doing things just like this ! hope some easy fix grumps so can be soon back in action
Smp Posted May 29, 2013 Posted May 29, 2013 Grumpy, You don't mention the model SME...........I have a 3009 mk2 fixed headshell - well it was fixed headsell as it snapped off there somehow during a move (it wasn't on a tt at the time) - the rest of the arm is in perfect condition and you can have it if you can use it in a repair. Can send you a photo if that helps. Let me know. 3
Grumpy Posted May 29, 2013 Author Posted May 29, 2013 That is a great offer thanks Smp, but i think I might be ok with an offer from a local SA SNA'r - I'll let you know. Oh yeah, mine is a 3009 improved ll fixed headshell
adrocks Posted May 29, 2013 Posted May 29, 2013 (edited) Grumpy I know breaking the arn was bad. But hey its not all bad, the great community spirit your catastrophe brings to the fore here is a definate positive. One of those things I really like about SNA. And with a bit of luck and goodwilll from others your misadventures will be sorted with not too much pain on your hip pocket. Take Wolsters advice don't beat yourself up about it and have a Coopers . These things happen to us all occasionaly, its part of being human. Edited May 29, 2013 by adrocks1
rocky500 Posted May 29, 2013 Posted May 29, 2013 Just a hint..... now is the time to finish puting a RCA and ground block on the rear before you replace the tonearm. 1
Telecine Posted May 29, 2013 Posted May 29, 2013 Good to hear that a solution or two may be at hand. For future reference, all parts are available for SME 3009 Tonearms.
Batty Posted May 29, 2013 Posted May 29, 2013 Spot of bad luck there Gary, but as you have found out every cloud has a silver lining. Well done SNA for coming to the rescue yet again. 1
davidsss Posted May 29, 2013 Posted May 29, 2013 Ooh, not good mate. Looks like you will be ok with the generosity of others though I know I can be quite clumsy so I really do need to be in the right frame of mind when I do things like mount a cart. So, if you're having a bad day stay away from the turntable! Hope it all works out. DS
Smp Posted May 29, 2013 Posted May 29, 2013 Grumpy, Mine is also the improved mk II model - let me know if you end up needing it.
Guest Muon Posted May 29, 2013 Posted May 29, 2013 Just as it all came together, that sucks. Though it looks like you will recover with a little help, I'm still looking forward to hearing your impressions with the new plinth
unclemack Posted May 29, 2013 Posted May 29, 2013 Sh*t news grumps...I've had attacks of the clumsys too and it hurts everytime. Hope it all works out mate. Cheers M
