Yes Im a dinosaur OK!

Im still listening to CDs via a s470 Bluray player via M51.  I am now getting read errors and as usual the optics is on its way out.

So ive have  had it with optical drives and decided to move into computer audio, may not be a smart move but i want to give it a go.

But instead of going all the way, I had to get a CD player anyway, and the OPPO105 was on special and it can read and process FLAC files via USB.

So I need to know:

What is everyone using in terms for ripping software

What would be a recommended external USB optical drive and a USB HDD for music storage.

When funds permit I will be getting a Laptop to manage all my music requirements and then I will need to invest in a AP2!!!  Maybe? :)

Hi mate

There are many different flavours of ripping software - I use XLD.

Important to use something that incorporates AccurateRip, whereby the rip is compared to an online

database of music to check and compensate for errors.

XLD issues a report at the end of each rip which verifies the accuracy of the rip.

Exact Audio Copy (EAC) is another free ripping application that has always been reliable for me. Once you set it up, you're away.

Out of interest, does the OPPO have limit on the size of external drives it can read?

Or DBpoweramp amp is another good product.

The other thing to consider is how many cd's do you intend to rip?   It looks like you intend to rip the cd's via a laptop and external usb optical drive.  That will be very slow by the time you rip hundreds of cd's.    If you have >500 discs for example I would recommend using something like DBpoweramp in a desktop pc with 2,3, or more DVD drives.  The program can handle ripping multiple cd's at once (it doesn't need to be a new pc).  But of course you need an old desktop with space for the DVD drives.  By the way, these drives only cost around 20 bucks each.   Well worth the time saving if you have 100's or 1000's of cd's to rip.

XLD may be able to do that too but I am not familiar with it

On mac mini - the Oyen external hard drives are recommended. I use one via firewire. it can also work via usb, check out the website. Also available on ebay.

No sure if you have a computer yet, but ripping do not require the best and latest equipment. I do all my ripping on a 3 year old laptop. I believe you should use something like dbpoweramp to check the rips to a database.
