Hey all

Been thinking of getting a projector for my room but I have no idear what I'm doing.

My first question is what do I need to get a 21:9 ratio or cinema scope setup.

Iv seen people use special lens adapters to so this but surely you can buy projectors that do it allready.

Agen I have no idear about projectors so was hoping to get much info as possible.

Iv been looking at getting the Sony VPL-HW30ES

Will this do what I want ?

30es has been replaced by the 50es. there is no zooming memories on the sonys which could be a pain doing scope where zooming is easiest. unfortuanately a lot of material is not scope so swapping between 16:9 and 21:9 can become a pain.

things to be carefull with what is the throw allowable in your room vs the size of screen plan to run. the sonys are not as flexible in positioning and zoom as epson and jvc so something to be very carefull with. also keep in mind viewing distance usually rule of thumb is sit about 3x image height. cna use that as a guage of screen size vs viewing distance :)

if completely new to projectors I would get out check some out in person. have a chat to people about your room and what might potentially fit to good result.

I know there is 3 ways you can do 21:9 or cinema scope setup with projector.  You mentioned special lens and they are at least $2000+ if buying new, there is also video processor based masking using product like Lumagen processor and the cheapest Lumagen is close to $2000 if you import from US.  The cheapest option is to go with JVC X35 with its zoom memory option .

As a "Old Timer" at PJ ... Try setting up a 3 tubed CRT PJ from scratch.

I eventually went the Sony route, that's after a lot of homework.

Reason I went Sony was the Panasonics smoothing made every movie look the same.

The JVC's contrast, although HUGE, just looked sort of un-natural , seemed hard to get my head around a suitable gamma balance, even though the colour balance appeared OK using a iOne display Pro.

Mind you, things like that can be caused by the source component.

Not all BluRay players are the same ...... or for that matter all Bluray Software players ... each can look quite different depending on what gear you are running it through.

Pity there is no "Take home and set up trial period" for PJ's that I know of.
