shaky Posted May 23, 2013 Posted May 23, 2013 Hi all. I am about to embark on the great vinyl journey, having not listened to a record playing in a long, long time. I have been looking around a little a trying to learn a bit about turntables and such, and was after advice on turntables to look at. My budget for this is around the $1k mark and my thinking is to go for an older, perhaps slighty collectable player, rather than buying a new one. I have seen the likes of Lenco L75/78s, Micro Seiki Bl 51, Denon DP, so was thinking something along those lines, with a view to a few mods down the track. Obviously, I'd like the thing to sound good so if you think that's the wrong idea, or have any other suggestions, please let me know. I do have a MM phono stage in my current Cyrus pre so will be happy using that for now. If you even have something you think might fit the bill, let me know. Thanks all in advance for your advice and help.
Krispy Audio Posted May 23, 2013 Posted May 23, 2013 Technics SL1210 with a few upgrades is what I'd be doing at that budget.
truongnguyenduc Posted May 23, 2013 Posted May 23, 2013 One vote for Lenco. Sound excellent, stable and easy to maintain. 1
Midori Posted May 24, 2013 Posted May 24, 2013 Technics SL1210 with a few upgrades is what I'd be doing at that budget. +1 on this, I myself had gone down this route. But I would not discount a RP3 (if you could stretch it a little) with that budget. Sent you a PM re the Technics.

shaky Posted May 24, 2013 Author Posted May 24, 2013 (edited) Thanks for all the finds Linc. You got me looking at hifido again! The Thorens is an interesting piece! And yes, that's the Micro Seiki I was talking about. Edited May 24, 2013 by shaky
Upfront Posted May 25, 2013 Posted May 25, 2013 http://bit.ly/10SpOuO Vintage American idler drive perhaps?
Sierra Posted May 25, 2013 Posted May 25, 2013 Found anything that takes your fancy yet Shaky? Well it was inevitable that you were going to have to buy a turntable after machining up those sensational red gum record weights You could also look at Thorens TD 150 or TD 160 models

shaky Posted May 25, 2013 Author Posted May 25, 2013 I think a preowned TT would get me more value and better quality on my budget so that's what I'm concentrating on. It's a shame that Linn has already finished. I hadn't seen that one and been out today! So missed out. Sierra, those weights are all spoken for. I will have to do something about one for me though when I have something to put it on. Thanks for the Thorens tip. I have been looking at them as well.
Upfront Posted May 26, 2013 Posted May 26, 2013 Second hand leaves you with a lot of options. http://bit.ly/12FbubB What do people think of something like this restored Lenco? With all the time and effort already put it it seems like a reasonable price to me.
tuyen Posted May 26, 2013 Posted May 26, 2013 Lencos sound great from my limited experience with tts. Just not the biggest a fan of the looks of factory tone arm/headshell !
tuyen Posted May 26, 2013 Posted May 26, 2013 But if you are a bit of a crafty, find a cheap lenco and do this... BOOM! to this:
tuyen Posted May 26, 2013 Posted May 26, 2013 Oops apologies just noticed you are leaning more towards a stock factory pre-owned TT instead of diy project. In which case, probably better choices out there. the Lencos are known just to be good base units that can improve heaps from simple (but often non-reversible) modifications.
shaky Posted May 26, 2013 Author Posted May 26, 2013 I was just looking at ptp last night and agree with you. Looks nice until your eyes see the price. And you hurt your jaw on the floor! Tuyen, I'm still a little in two mind as to which way to go, get a complete unit or build one up. I like the look of that work done to the lenco!!
