Guest ausairman Posted May 21, 2013 Posted May 21, 2013 Hey everyone, I've joined this forum to try to get a better idea of what people would be inclined to purchase in the way of HiFi-related cables and stuff. A friend of mine and myself are currently in the process of brainstorming for setting up a cable import/online retail business. Basically we're thinking of selling the stuff that costs a fortune at JBHiFi and Harvey Norman, but that people would be less inclined to buy online because they think the quality might be sub-par. We realise it's a small market but if I can get an idea of exactly what the "average" enthusiast might like to see on his setup then I think we might be able to make something of it. Basically for now we're thinking of selling the following in high quality, themed sets of 2,3 and 5 metre lengths: - HDMI male-male - RCA male-male - 3.5mm headphone male/female and male/male - Toslink fibre optic - currently undecided on Ethernet and DVI cables The idea for now is just to stock the sorts of things that most people would buy. We're deliberately steering clear of any 240v cables or anything that is too specific or less likely to warrant a "nice look and feel". Any feedback would be appreciated, and I'll try to post some pics from potential suppliers in the lounge to start a discussion once I get permission
LogicprObe Posted May 22, 2013 Posted May 22, 2013 Hi there. Given that my wholesale price for a 5 metre HDMI cable (they seem to work fine to me) is $6.90 + GST, the market seems pretty much saturated. When HDMI first came out, I remember 2 metre cables costing around 50 bucks! As for ethernet............they are nearly giving them away these days....................although, 'special' Dante cables seem to be making a quid. Convincing people that your 'higher quality' cables will make a difference is your big hurdle, I fear.
Jventer Posted May 22, 2013 Posted May 22, 2013 Welcome Interesting concept. I will give some feedback. In early 2010 I bought a home theatre system at Harvey Norman that needed cables. I paid about $500 for HDMI and component cables from Monster and Belkin - I was told that I need them for 3D, ARC etc etc. Then I joined SNA. Since then I have spend a lot more on cables, mostly buying used, ebay, graysonline or online, but anywhere where it is reasonable. The last HDMI cable I bought was 1.8 m and was less than $10 at Woolworths. According to the packaging it is V1.4 and ARC capable. I am using it to stream from mac mini to AVR and it works well. My opinion is that most people buying at HN or JB are once off purchasers that believe the sales people. Forum members are more informed. 2
Guest Willow Posted May 26, 2013 Posted May 26, 2013 Welcome ausairman , good luck with the venture. What you need is something unique and left-field , something the others aren't doing , or are too afraid to attempt.
Guest ausairman Posted April 4, 2014 Posted April 4, 2014 Hi everyone, Thanks for the feedback (last year). I thought I had turned on email notifications but apparently not, and I thought no one responded! Anyway, we ultimately decided not to go ahead with it for the reasons you mentioned; the margins were too low and we didn't have any evidence that demand would be there to warrant the investment required to do something "different" and purchase all the cables up front.
LogicprObe Posted April 5, 2014 Posted April 5, 2014 We were wondering where you went! Don't worry about notifications....................just check in daily!
