buddyev Posted May 21, 2013 Posted May 21, 2013 Anyone up for a music gtg? No rules about the music we will play, but roughly themed around cross-cultural, cross-genre collaborations. I'm listening to lots of arabic inspired jazz at the moment etc - Anouar Brahem, Joseph Tawadros - but any kind of interesting meeting of different musical traditions. The GTG will be about the music not the gear. I have a TT and cdp. (if anyone wants to bring another dac that would be okay) Any preferences for Saturday 1st or Sunday 2nd June? Let me know what dates work Russ 1
illusion Posted May 24, 2013 Posted May 24, 2013 Buddyev, I've been listening to Anouar Brahem's "The Astounding Eyes Of Rita" and must say it's exceptional. Also on rotation I have Asaf Avidan & Rabih Abou-Khalil's " Al-Jadida", both well worth a listen. 1
buddyev Posted May 24, 2013 Author Posted May 24, 2013 Hi illusion, i'm a big fan of these guys - astounding eyes of rita is terrific. I haven't heard al jadida, is it a recent one?
djb Posted May 27, 2013 Posted May 27, 2013 Don't know if I've got any appropriate music but I'll come and learn 1
sligoriverblues Posted May 27, 2013 Posted May 27, 2013 Hey, I'd be interested... Have you decided on the day, Russ? I can bring my Chemirani/Clemenic LP. Maybe some Taraf De Haidouks on CD, too 1
gz76 Posted May 27, 2013 Posted May 27, 2013 Interested in broadening my horizons if there's room and you don't mind me coming. Not sure I'd have much to offer musically tho. 1
buddyev Posted May 28, 2013 Author Posted May 28, 2013 Great. Is sunday 1 pm okay for you all? Let me know if that's difficult because either day is fine by me. As for the music, I was just trying to come up with something a bit different but bring whatever music you like.

Russ If you like Joseph Tawadros (as I do! ), you might like Dhafar Youssef / Wolfgang Muthspiel. Try "Electric Sufi". I have a 2nd CD of this pair but I'm afraid I can't recall its name. Regards, Andy
buddyev Posted May 28, 2013 Author Posted May 28, 2013 Thanks Andy, this album has been mentioned a couple of times recently and its on my list. Come along if you can.
Volunteer sir sanders zingmore Posted May 28, 2013 Volunteer Posted May 28, 2013 How about throwing some awesome klezmer into the mix to spice up the cross cultural tension
buddyev Posted May 28, 2013 Author Posted May 28, 2013 (edited) You're onto something here. we could recreate in musical miniature all the conflicts of the middle east - and solve them in a spirit of cooperation and fraternal love in a single afternoon. Like your style. Edited May 28, 2013 by buddyev
illusion Posted May 29, 2013 Posted May 29, 2013 Alas, Sunday will be a miss for me . Rabih Abou-Khalil's " Al-Jadida", is quite an old release, but well worth a listen.
caddisgeek Posted May 30, 2013 Posted May 30, 2013 Should be a good arvo, sorry to miss it. Lot's of pic's please gents
cheekyboy Posted June 2, 2013 Posted June 2, 2013 Hi Russ, Thanks for the hospitality yesterday afternoon and also for sending me a PM invitation, because I had missed this thread. A very enjoyable listen to some non mainstream music and definitely a genre worth exploring some more for me. A great spread of food, a couple of glasses of wine and some good company combined with a very good sounding system, made for a very pleasant GTG. Cheers, Keith
Juicester Posted June 3, 2013 Posted June 3, 2013 funny that. i saw this thread but missed the PM! Hope it was a good time - annoyed I missed it.
bigears Posted June 3, 2013 Posted June 3, 2013 G'day Russ, Thank you for all of your hospitality and company yesterday. I had a ball listening to some of your jazz albums and talking about gear all in the comfort of your beautiful home. see you around the traps. Tony
gz76 Posted June 3, 2013 Posted June 3, 2013 A very relaxed and enjoyable afternoon with great music and great people. The spread was impressive too, especially that fancy quiche you must have slaved over for hours.
buddyev Posted June 3, 2013 Author Posted June 3, 2013 (edited) Real men do eat quiche, after all. We've come a long way, Australia. Youse are all very welcome Edited June 3, 2013 by buddyev
Juicester Posted June 3, 2013 Posted June 3, 2013 Youse are all very welcome haha.. gold. you'll be wearing blundstones and cursing those flamin' galah's in no time.
sligoriverblues Posted June 6, 2013 Posted June 6, 2013 Mate, thanks for an absolutely great afternoon!!! I enjoyed hearing some of the people I knew, but mostly those I wasn't familiar with! What a great idea for a GTG, Russ, and your knowledge in the area of "World Music" is impressive! Pity I had to leave early, but a wedding anniversary in my "work environment" is not a small thing Great food, too! That beautiful blue cheese disappeared very quickly Nice to see cheekyboy and djb again and to meet Glenn! Thanks again and looking forward to catching up soon. All the best! Jan
