kczar01 Posted May 18, 2013 Posted May 18, 2013 (edited) well Many of you may remember my old system which still lives on. You see, we had this spare living / formal lounge, (you know the one you never use or were banned as a id from going in there). I made the decision and after alot of umming and arrring i was like I'm gonna take it over / commandeer . I prepped the room took out all that wasn't being used and went shopping and go some of Yamaha's finest. I love these speakers they are very musical and what I believe (or my ears tell me) to be correct. Couldn't go past them especially the price they were. However the room has some issues the i need to sort out. It has no doors at this stage, the bass is a bit weird, is good when I stand, but poor when I sit. and needs a big shaggy rug to sort out the floors. Well i love it, especially when I am running in the speakers and the misses comes home and stops in the room and goes.... WOW that sounds good. Few more pics, enjoy!!!! System Components. - Yamaha Soavo 3 - Yamaha AS700 - Yamaha CDS300 - Aaron sub 100 - Chord Silverscreen Speaker cable (3m) - Audioquest Banana plugs - Chord Chorus (1m) interconnects - DIY diffusion panel (at rear) WTB - Turntable (my $50 one just doesn't cut it....) - Some Diffusion Panels for the roof - Doors..... - Upgrade Sub TO DO - Brought some acoustic insulation today, will make some panels in the weeks to come - Position the dog, in the room to gain further acoustic treatment (jokes) Enjoy Kyle Edited June 13, 2013 by kczar01 2
Guest yamaha_man Posted May 18, 2013 Posted May 18, 2013 Nice looking setup, would love to hear those Yamaha's one day.
kczar01 Posted May 18, 2013 Author Posted May 18, 2013 Nice looking setup, would love to hear those Yamaha's one day. Mate to be honest I was hoping this would catch your eye. They are very natural sounding and correct IMO, and would be interested in you comparing them to the old school flag ship model. If you come up for a GTG or whatever, i would be more than happy to accommodate. ( Also, bit dirty my old man just brought the 1's) Regards
Guest yamaha_man Posted May 18, 2013 Posted May 18, 2013 Thanks for the offer, will see how I go. How do the 3's compare to the 1's?
kczar01 Posted May 18, 2013 Author Posted May 18, 2013 Thanks for the offer, will see how I go. How do the 3's compare to the 1's? Old man and I were chatting about this today, there is one more bass driver, so it gets a bit more bass that's all, nothing more, same tweeter and mid driver, he has a much larger open room to fill so works out well. Makes or an interesting battle.
matt200sr Posted May 18, 2013 Posted May 18, 2013 Nice room you have there. You can try moving those big speakers out from the wall and maybe even toe in slightly to the direction of the listening position. Impressive dvd collection I think I see. 1

Thanks Mate, I will trey positioning them tomorrow thanks fo th tip, they are out a bit already, but ill try again. As far as the DVD's go, yeah its getting a bit excessive we are just about to but another dvd tower t fit in the middle there, ( I went a bit nuts there at one point at Jb hifi)
LuzArt Posted May 18, 2013 Posted May 18, 2013 As you mentioned a rug, it would make a massive difference so do that first. Some strategically placed absorbing panels would do wonders too. 1

Thanks man, will do there is a rug ther, but not sure it is doing much being tight knit, i have like 20 sheets of the bats, so plenty to go around hop fully.
LuzArt Posted May 18, 2013 Posted May 18, 2013 Yes the rug under the chairs, I don't think would be doing too much. Keep it to protect the floor from the chairs but add a thicker, shag type rug for as much of the floor between the chairs and speakers as possible. This will help with reflections in a big way. Even some panels behind the speakers will improve back reflections.
kramered Posted May 19, 2013 Posted May 19, 2013 Wonderful speakers. I reviewed the bigger model and was very impressed. As you say, your model is almost identical in sound from the mid bass up. Standard of finish is superb too. Try a small degree of toe-in and as suggested give them a bit of room to breathe behind them. Enjoy them! Cheers, EK 1

How far from thr rear wall do you think?
kramered Posted May 19, 2013 Posted May 19, 2013 Thanks for the tips, I have toed them in since the shots. How far from thr rear wall do you think? Hard to tell but I would probably start with bringing them in from the corners so they'll end up a tad closer to each other. Also good to keep the distances between speaker and rear wall and speaker and side walls different. Experiment with it and eventually you'll reach a point where the soundstage is wide and deep while imaging is precisely focused. Those speakers can do that really well. Cheers, EK 1
kramered Posted May 19, 2013 Posted May 19, 2013 Oh, btw I'm talking inches at a time in terms of movement. Those speakers can image so well that can be all it takes. Cheers, EK 1

David.M Posted May 21, 2013 Posted May 21, 2013 Looks good Kyle, you won't know yourself once you get the room acoustics & speaker/listening positions sorted out 1
kczar01 Posted May 21, 2013 Author Posted May 21, 2013 Looks good Kyle, you won't know yourself once you get the room acoustics & speaker/listening positions sorted out Thanks played a bit with them last night and will keep tweaking them. BTW just, PM'd you.
Luc Posted June 3, 2013 Posted June 3, 2013 Very nice Kyle, fantastic speakers by all reports, I'm jealous. Now the chairs, what type are they and where did you get them? I'm actually looking at just one chair as we're a two person household here rattling around with at least half a dozen rooms to spare and I'm not hanging out the 'Welcome' shingle to my room...one chair-one person... and that's me, the Handbrake gets the rest of the house... Your big open doorway into your room is what I've got and I'm going to a fair deal of difficulty in filling it in with a big slider. Reason being it lets the music out into the Handbrake's territory so I'm closing it all off. Definitely look at getting some heavy duty carpet/rug down on that timber floor and hang some heavy drapes off the big window with the venetians in it. I'm ditching my timber slats(venetians) and going for full curtains/drapes with heavy backing from pelmet/bar to floor. The Handbrake who actually does a fair bit of interior design(rather well if her clients/friends are to be believed) has been looking at your pics and she's got ideas+colours in mind for you...I threw her a bone and a years subscription to Houzz and told her to go away. Look forward to more reports from chez Kyle 1

Look forward to more reports from chez Kyle Thanks Luc, Chairs are THE BEST plus 10. esp for the money. They are Ikea http://www.ikea.com/au/en/catalog/categories/series/07472/ I'm just about to update the room.... re the door I was looking at doing something like drapes, i have the ones from the study still i can move however, the slats need to stay. (the room is at the front of the house - privacy reasons) Yes I need a rug, I want one bad but i need to wait probably 1-2 months, I have a puppy and it still has boo boo's inside.....on rugs. As for the misses....I just painted that room.....what does she have in mind? Cheers Kyle
Luc Posted June 3, 2013 Posted June 3, 2013 The slats can stay but hang some drapes on that window, you'll be uber surprised at the improvement in your room's reflections. Keep them pulled back when your not using the system, pull them closed when you are. As for the misses....I just painted that room.....what does she have in mind? We're not talking at the moment so I can't ask her(we're having a disagreement about Sansuis i.e my lack of a 6900 and her threats to do violence on me if I get one) 1

kczar01 Posted June 3, 2013 Author Posted June 3, 2013 Ok so a bit of an update, I put the sound batts in the ceiling above the room, I hate being in the ceiling, esp this house has beams running everywhere (due to an extension) someone else can do the rest..... Mainly i have also done some DIY and installed a sliding door on one of the walls and it has made a massive difference. (still needs paint) I also found these at bunnings to isolate my cd player i also made this panel for the rear wall and gave being artistic a go. Enjoy 1
David.M Posted June 3, 2013 Posted June 3, 2013 The panel looks good, dare I say you could consider giving up your day job 1
