orcker Posted May 18, 2013 Posted May 18, 2013 (edited) FWIW, as part of the office reno recently, work decided to give away a very old Toshiba SD-2500 DVD player, which attracted no takers. "Doesn't do Blu-Ray" "Looks dated" "Mate, new DVD players are like $70" were some of the comments. I raised my hand for the player, for the strange reason I'd just wanted to hear what the sound quality might be through it's digital coax out........... Upon bringing it home, I discovered it wasn't reading CDs. Look I have had old players in the past that merely required a simple clean of the laser with a Q-tip and Windex. Tried that and viola, it actually works perfectly. And work well it does, but not through the digital out (which I think is 16/44) This vintage DVD player actually sounds pretty darn good through it's onboard audio output. It sounds even better when I upgraded the PS fuse within to an allegedly audiophile grade fuse from Valabs. Doesn't beat my mid-range Shanling for clarity and timing, but it's an enjoyable listen nonetheless with my 6BQ5 amp, and sounds heaps better than my newish Panasonic Blu-Ray player. Hell, it sounds better than most of the sub-$500 CD and DVD players I have owned in the past. And it gets to the first track faster than some CD players do. -O- Edited May 18, 2013 by orcker 1
wolster Posted May 18, 2013 Posted May 18, 2013 Good story, Orcker. Old does not always mean useless.
Batty Posted May 18, 2013 Posted May 18, 2013 I hooked up a $60 Samsung DVD P181 to demonstrate a CD I was selling, sounded so good through the digi out to NFB-2 I have left it connected. 1
